Before Ben Affleck reasserted his franchise credentials with The Accountant and its follow-up, the recently released The Accountant 2, he’d previously made an attempt to appeal to the dads of America with The Sum of All Fears. Affleck played the popular CIA analyst Jack Ryan in the movie, based on Tom Clancy‘s book of the same name. It was Affleck’s only time playing the character, who’d go on to be rebooted twice again. The Sum of All Fears debuted recently on Netflix, and immediately made a dent on the viewership charts.
According to FlixPatrol, The Sum of All Fearswas the seventh-most-watched title worldwide on Netflix on June 23, earning a total of 193 points. It has accumulated a total of over 500 points so far this month. Directed by Phil Alden Robinson, The Sum of All Fears was produced on a reported budget of $68 million and released back in 2002. The movie ended up grossing around $195 million at the worldwide box office, but this apparently wasn’t good enough for a direct sequel to be produced. Perhaps the mixed reviews had something to do with it; the film is currently sitting at 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. The character was rebooted several years later with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, starring Chris Pine in the titular role. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the movie made around $130 million globally.
Shadow Recruit didn’t spawn a sequel either, with the property being rebooted for streaming with John Krasinskiin the lead role. The Jack Ryan series ran for four seasons on Prime Video, paving the way for programming like Reacher. Krasinski will return as the character in a feature film. Before Affleck landed the role, the character was played by Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October, and by Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. In total, the Jack Ryan movies have grossed over $900 million globally.
Affleck Has a Couple of Streaming Titles in the Pipeline
While he makes inroads into the Netflix charts, Affleck has been dominating Prime Video. For weeks, The Accountant 2 has led the field, while The Accountant has experienced a bump in viewership as well. The sequel just about managed to pass the $100 million mark worldwide in its theatrical run. Affleck will soon star in Animals, which he also directed. After that, he’ll re-team with his frequent collaborator Matt Damon on Joe Carnahan‘s The RIP. You can watch The Sum of All Fears on Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
