Friendship will always win out — just ask Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Over more than three decades, the pair of pals have teamed up to deliver a score of incredible (and sometimes not so incredible) titles. For their latest pairing, the duo are leading the action-packed Netflix film, The Rip, from filmmaker Joe Carnahan (Not Without Hope), which has hit big with the streamer’s global audience. FlixPatrol reports that the police-centered flick has toppled the platform’s worldwide chart, clocking in at the number one spot, while critics at Rotten Tomatoes are praising it with the Certified Fresh approval rating of 82%. Beyond that, the film marks a milestone moment for Netflix, as a new report reveals that The Rip garnered the streamer its biggest feature opening since last year’s Happy Gilmore 2.
For those who like to dig into the numbers, the Adam Sandler-led sequel putted a whopping 46.7 million views, making it Netflix’s biggest feature-length opening to date. Just a bit behind it, The Rip landed 41.6 million views, giving it overnight bragging rights. While it may not have completely taken the crown away from the reigning champion, earning two top viewership stats in just six months is quite an accomplishment for Netflix.
Damon and Affleck’s latest thriller sees the actors in the roles of police officers working in the narcotics unit of the Miami-Dade Police Department. After the team raids a stash house and stumbles upon a life-changing sum of money, suspicions begin to take hold and make each member question their own moralities and those of their peers. In addition to the leading men, the film also features performances from Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace) and Scott Adkins (Prisoner of War).
The Showmance of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
One of the longest lasting friendships and creative partnerships in Hollywood, Damon and Affleck first appeared alongside one another in the 1992 sports drama, School Ties. Both of the young men’s careers would fully take off just a few years later after they penned and starred in the Academy Award-winning feature, Good Will Hunting. In the decades since, they’ve returned to work alongside one another in multiple genres thanks to films such as Dogma, The Last Duel, in which they both starred, and Small Things Like These and Unstoppable, in which they both worked behind the scenes as producers.
The Rip is now streaming on Netflix.
