If you can’t get enough of James Gunn‘s Superman, then August will be a great month for you. A DreamWorks animated feature where F1 star Brad Pittplays a parody of the Man of Steel will be entering Netflix this August. Megamind is a 2010 superhero comedy film that received praise from fans and critics alike. It is entering the streaming giant on August 1, giving superhero fans another chance to revisit this iconic feature, which contains great lines, visuals, and moments that have slowly made their way into pop and meme culture.
Megamind stars Will Ferrell, who plays the supervillain Megamind, who one day is able to defeat his arch nemesis, Metro Man (Pitt). Following his victory, he rules over Metro City, but eventually gets bored and decides to find someone who could become a hero and face him. This entire feature screams Superman/DC parody, one example being Tina Fey‘s character, Roxanne Ritchi, a news reporter who serves not only as a love interest but also as a parody of Lois Lane. Megamind has received numerous nominations since its release, as well as receiving an average critics’ score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 72% average audience score. It also generated over $321 million at the global box office.
Will There Be More ‘Megamind’ Movies?
Following Megamind‘s release in 2010, DreamWorks released a sequel, titled Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate. It was a direct-to-streaming film released on Peacock in March 2024, featuring a new voice cast. The film starred Keith Ferguson as Megamind and Laura Post as Roxanne Ritchi. This film served as a pilot for the TV series, Megamind Rules!, which ran for only one season with 16 episodes. Additionally, a short film titled Megamind: The Button of Doom was released in 2011, in which Ferrell and Pitt reprised their roles. Unlike its predecessor, Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate was poorly received by both fans and critics. It earned a very low critics’ score of 9% and a low audience score of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the TV show fared slightly better, earning a 77% average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Currently, there has been no news on whether the Megamind franchise will release another feature, following the poor results of the sequel. However, if the live-action adaptation ofHow to Train Your Dragon was able to find success, one could hope that DreamWorks would consider making a live-action remake of Megamind, given the constant appearance of superhero films in theaters.
Megamind enters Netflix on August 1, 2025. Meanwhile, Superman is now flying high in theaters. Follow Collider to keep up to date with the latest updates.
