Battlefield 6: Best Combat Engineer Loadout

Every class in Battlefield 6 has two available Training Paths at launch, one of which is unlocked by default. Unlocking the second Training Path for the Engineer class, Combat Engineer, is generally much easier than the other classes’ equivalent. Getting the Combat Engineer Training Path will open up a new loadout for you to use, giving you a total of three so you can easily hot-swap roles between lives.

Since it takes a while to unlock new weapons and get class gadgets in Battlefield 6, this guide focuses on the items you will likely have around the time you unlock the Combat Engineer Training Path, provided you’ve been playing the Engineer regularly. For reference, I unlocked Combat Engineer around level 30.

Engineer Class Combat Engineer Training Path Explained

General Tips

An Engineer character in Battlefield 6 holding a rocket launcher.

As you earn points playing Combat Engineer, you’ll unlock the following buffs, in order:

  • Gadget Fortification – Repairing a friendly gadget permanently increases its max health.
  • Overheat Control – Heat buildup on gadgets and vehicle weapons is 50% slower.
  • Vehicle Regeneration – Occupy a vehicle to start regenerating its health (activates above critical damage state).
  • Thermal Overdrive (Active Ability) – Repair Tool fixes with +50% efficiency for 10 seconds.

Use active abilities by pressing R1+L1 (PS5), RB+LB (Xbox), or Q/mouse wheel (PC).

The Combat Engineer has a similar, but subtly distinct role from the Anti-Armor Training Path. Playing Anti-Armor means you can thrive on the ground, using your rockets, but when switching to Combat Engineer, you want to be in vehicles as much as possible.

It’s a good idea to pilot vehicles frequently and learn how to use them, but the Combat Engineer can also be very valuable simply occupying a passenger seat. In a tank, for instance, you can protect yourself from enemy fire while regenerating your own health and the tank’s. Overheat Control can be especially powerful in a gunner seat too, where you’ll often be on the lookout for enemies with rocket launchers.

Here are the weapons and gadgets I recommend when starting out with the Combat Engineer Training Path:

  • Primary – UMG-40
  • Secondary – ES 5.7
  • Gadget 1 – RPG-7V2
  • Gadget 2 – Vehicle Supply Crate
  • Throwable – Anti-Vehicle Grenade
  • Melee – Sledgehammer

I typically like to run a carbine while playing Engineer (go for the AK-205 if you want some good accuracy at slightly longer ranges), but the role of your primary while playing Combat Engineer is to protect your vehicle. An SMG works best for hopping out to quickly kill enemies approaching with C4 or Anti-Vehicle Mines, and the UMG-40 is the best option from the first four SMGs; it makes up for its rate of fire with great accuracy.

Despite wanting to focus on keeping your own team’s vehicles in the fight, the RPG is too good and too versatile to not bring along with the Combat Engineer Training Path. Tanks duels can often come down to the wire, so if you’re in a passenger seat, you can give your side an edge by hopping out and firing a rocket.

Aim for the sides and back of enemy vehicles with rockets; you will do more damage that way.

On your way to unlocking the Combat Engineer Training Path, you’ll first earn the Vehicle Supply Crate, and it can become a very potent tool in your loadout. Provided you can keep a vehicle from getting destroyed for long enough, you may run out of ammo – or at least use it faster than it regenerates.

When using the Vehicle Supply Crate, you’ll need to make sure you and your vehicle are behind cover and away from opponents. You’ll have to get out to place it on the ground, but once it’s set up, it’s like a portable vehicle supply point. Importantly, it will further reduce your equipment cooldowns, so if you can place it strategically near an objective you’re controlling, you’ll have the advantage in fights.

The Mini Frag Grenades are fun, but it’s still best for an Engineer to have as much vehicle-destroying firepower as possible on foot, even when playing the piloting-centric Combat Engineer Training Path. The Anti-Vehicle Grenades might be the difference between destroying a vehicle and letting it get away and be repaired in Battlefield 6.
