If you were planning a MonsterVerse marathon before Godzilla x Kong: Supernova stomps into cinemas in 2027, you’d better act fast. Netflix has announced that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the franchise’s highest-grossing installment to date, is leaving the platform next month.
The 2024 titan showdown, which brought Godzilla and Kong together again for an even bigger battle, will exit Netflix on June 14, 2025. While the news may feel like a body slam to fans still dissecting the film’s kaiju lore, there’s at least one upside: The New Empire will remain available to stream on HBO Max, alongside Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong.
The removal is particularly surprising given the MonsterVerse’s momentum. With Godzilla x Kong: Supernova currently in production, you’d think Warner Bros. Discovery would want its biggest hit — literally and financially — as accessible as possible. After all, The New Empire roared to $571 million worldwide, setting a new franchise record and scoring an 89% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad for a film that divided critics but delighted fans with its unapologetic monster mayhem.
What Is the MonsterVerse About?
For the uninitiated, the MonsterVerse is Legendary and Toho’s joint cinematic universe centered on iconic kaiju like Godzilla and King Kong. It kicked off with 2014’s Godzilla, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston, and has since expanded into five films and two streaming series.
That includes the recent Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, a TV entry that dives into the secretive organization tracking these titanic threats. Season 1 is streaming on Apple TV+, with a second season currently in post-production. The franchise has been growing both in scale and in story — and it shows no signs of slowing down.
Details about Supernova are still under wraps, but we do know this much: it’s shaping up to be a cosmic clash. The sequel is being filmed in Queensland, Australia, and marks the return of Dan Stevens as Trapper. He’ll be joined by an impressive cast including Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill. Behind the camera, Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) is directing, with a script from David Callaham (Shang-Chi) and Michael Lloyd Green.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is set to crash into theaters on March 26, 2027. You have until June 14, 2025, to catch The New Empire while it still streams on Netflix.
