‘Bad Monkey’ Season 2 Reunites Vince Vaughn With One of His Most Legendary Co-Stars

John Malkovich may have been cut from Fantastic Four: First Stepsafter being cast as the Red Ghost, master of the Super-Apes, but he’s about to have an encounter with a Bad Monkey instead. The two-time Oscar nominee is joining the second season of the hit AppleTV+ crime comedy. He’ll menace Vince Vaughn‘s Andrew Yancy, a cop-turned-health-inspector, as a Floridian crime lord.

According to reports, Malkovich will star as Spencer, the head of a major South Florida criminal organization, in the show’s second season. The first season was based on the 2013 Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name; while that novel got a sequel in 2016, Razor Girl, which sees Yancy get tangled up with an alluring con artist and a reality TV star, the second season of the TV series will be based on an original story. Vaughn is set to return as Yancy, and series creator Bill Lawrence will be back as well; however, no announcement has been made as to whether any of the first season’s characters, or at least those who survived the season, will return. Vaughn previously starred with Malkovich in the thriller Arkansas.

What Happened in the First Season of ‘Bad Monkey’?

Andrew Yancy was a Florida cop who was busted down to health inspector after an altercation with the abusive husband of his girlfriend, Bonnie Witt (Michelle Monaghan). Hoping to get his old job back, he agreed to deliver a severed arm to the Miami morgue, where he and Dr. Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) determine it belonged to Nick Stripling (Rob Delaney). Yancy and Rosa start getting closer as they look into Stripling’s death and his sketchy young wife Eve (Meredith Hagner). Pretty soon, the bodies start piling up as their investigation leads them to the Bahamas, where Eve and her mysterious boyfriend are involved in a shady real estate deal that’s prompted fisherman Neville (Ronald Peet) to seek the supernatural aid of the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith). Oh, and Bonnie is actually a fugitive from the law, a detestable yuppie (Alex Moffat) is building an eyesore house next to Yancy’s, and there’s a bad monkey (Crystal). Once all the dust settles, however, Yancy’s approached by his colleague and friend, Rogelio (John Ortiz), about a new case…

Malkovich has been nominated for an Oscar twice, for Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire. Earlier this year, he starred in the thriller Opus, and is slated to star in the drama In the Hand of Dante, the action comedy Sacrifice, and the biopic The Yellow Tie. He was cast in Fantastic Four: First Steps as the villainous Red Ghost, and appeared in the film’s trailer, but his scenes were cut from the finished film.

Bad Monkey‘s second season is expected to begin production next month. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
