‘Babylon Berlin’ Gears Up for Explosive 5th and Final Season With Massive Update

It’s now been over three years since the final episode of the fourth season of Babylon Berlin, the hit German neo-noir series based on Volker Kutscher‘s Gereon Rath novel series, first aired. After almost two years with the future of the series remaining unknown, June 2024 brought a long-overdue update as it was confirmed that a fifth season, also set to be the show’s last, had been commissioned. Now, after many more months of waiting, Babylon Berlin fans can finally rejoice in some even longer-overdue celebratory news.

Officially, according to a new report, Babylon Berlin Season 5 has wrapped production. “The final season is an 8-episode arc set during the last days of the republic,” the report confirms, “from February 1933, just after Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor of Germany, through March 5, when, following a violent and murderous campaign against his political opponents, he held elections that would secure his absolute power.” Although a release date is still unknown for Season 5, fans can rest assured they will be able to stream the last eight episodes on MHz Choice. Series co-creators Tom Tykwer, Henk Handloegten, and Achim von Borries said of the final outing:

“We now end with the final season during the last days of this crumbling republic, in February 1933, perhaps the most dramatic month in German history. All our characters are now finally called upon to show their true colors in a system that is being turned upside down before their eyes. They fight, dance, implore, betray, sing, scream, hate, and love as if there was no tomorrow. And the series finds its most dazzling moments in its darkest hour.”

‘Babylon Berlin’ Is a Critical Darling

Over four seasons to date, Babylon Berlin has proven time and again to be one of the best international options on U.S. streaming. A winner of the inaugural European Achievement in Fiction Series Award at the European Film Awards, four German Television Awards, and the Grand Prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards, the show also boasts a perfect 100% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a strong 89% rating from audiences. The fifth season will see both Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries return, with the pair having already won awards for their respective performances.

Babylon Berlin has officially wrapped production on its fifth and final season. A release date is currently unknown, so make sure to stay tuned to Collider for updates.
