Apple TV’s Lowest-Rated Sci-Fi Series Defies the Odds on Streaming Charts

Apple TV has proven to be the premier home for sci-fi shows, but the lowest-rated series of the bunch has found sustained streaming success. Four years ago, Apple released the first season of Invasion, the sci-fi series following an alien invasion from three different perspectives around the world. It isn’t until Season 3, which just wrapped up last week, that all these perspectives come together and the stakes of the story rise to new heights. On the back of a divisive Season 3 finale, Invasion has surged to the #3 spot on Apple TV streaming charts, even beating higher-rated shows like Foundation and Severance.

What makes this success even more impressive is the fact that Apple has not yet renewed Invasion for a fourth season. Creator Simon Kinberg has been open about sharing his plans for the show, admitting that he envisioned it as a four-season series. Invasion hasn’t been particularly beloved by critics or audiences — it holds scores of 60% from the former and 48% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes — but it has found success in the viewership metric. Apple is likely deliberating right now whether the show will get another season or not, and the announcement could be coming any day now.

Invasion may not have any major A-listers on the call sheet, but that hasn’t stopped the show from becoming a successful series under Apple. The biggest name involved in the show is Shamier Anderson, who faced off with Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4. Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, India Brown, and Azhy Robertson also have recurring roles in Invasion as Aneesha Malik, Mitsuki Yamto, Jamila Huston, and Luke Malik.

What’s Apple TV’s Highest-Rated Sci-Fi Series?

Invasion may be the lowest-rated sci-fi series under Apple, but the title for the highest-rated sci-fi show belongs to Severance. Through two seasons, the show holds a nearly flawless 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 80% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. This narrowly edges out Foundation, which has average scores of 87% from critics and 72% from audiences on the aggregator site. Even Constellation, the Noomi Rapace-led sci-fi series that Apple canned after one season, holds a higher rating than Invasion. Apple has released new seasons of Severance, Foundation, and Invasion this year, with more coming next year and beyond.

Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Invasion, and watch the first three seasons on Apple TV.
