Ahead of the ‘Masters of the Universe’ Film, She-Ra Gets the Barbie Doll She Always Deserved

He-Man may be getting his live-action film in Masters of the Universe, but She-Ra isn’t doing too shabby either. In a People Magazine exclusive, the He-Man character is getting represented by Barbie for the first time. On the characters’ 40th anniversary, Mattel revealed that they will release a She-Ra doll to the public on June 18th, 2025. Photos released exclusively to the outlet show She-Ra in her iconic headpiece, accompanied by the Sword of Protection.

She-Ra first debuted as the long-lost twin sister of He-Man in the short-lived animated series, She-Ra and the Princess of Power. Armed with her magical sword, she is the most powerful woman in the universe. This idea was revitalized in the 2018 series for Netflix, which lasted for five seasons. This release will only further incite appreciation for the live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe. Nicholas Galitzine will take on the mantle of He-Man, otherwise known as Prince Adam of Eternia in the upcoming film. The project will also be populated by stars Sasheer Zamata, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, and James Purefoy. She-Ra has not yet been cast if she is intended to show up at all in the film. Luckily for fans, She-Ra’s Barbie collaboration should tide them over.

Barbie Is Having a Renaissance

Barbie has come a long way since the criticisms of the doll being anti-feminist. While true that the body type of the long-running doll is not realistic for most women that it is attempting to portray, Greta Gerwig’s fantastic 2023 film gave the franchise a new reputation. The film, starring Margot Robbie, championed women’s authenticity and the horrifying nature of the patriarchy, which somehow involves a lot of horses. Amidst it all, Robbie’s Barbie found her true calling and has given Mattel a new narrative for the doll.

She-Ra is the perfect choice to spearhead a new era for Barbie. Gerwig’s film showed all the different flavors of Barbie, just how no woman is the same. She-Ra is a role model whose strength against evil is something all girls should aspire to. For those interested in more content, they may be in luck as well. In 2024, Variety reported that a She-Ra series was in the works for Amazon, which could be a good companion piece for the Masters of the Universe film. It has not yet been confirmed as going to series, but may be a new fantasy opportunity after the streamer canceled TheWheel of Time. Until then, fans can grab the She-Ra Barbie when it hits shelves on June 18th.
