Tom Hiddleston’s award-winning spy thriller, The Night Manager, finally returns to the small screen after nearly ten years, and the wait was definitely worth it. Based on John le Carré’s 1993 novel of the same name, the 2016 adaptation was led by the Marvel star, who portrayed the titular protagonist investigating an illegal arms sale.
The series was developed by BBC One, with AMC airing season 1 back in 2016. Although le Carré’s book didn’t have any sequels, The Night Manager season 2 will continue with Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine with an original story, as he infiltrates a Colombian drug dealer.
While the second installment already premiered on Prime Video, the first reviews are now in. As of writing, The Night Manager season 2 has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 14 reviews. Although the score will likely fluctuate as more reviews are tabulated, it’s a good start since season 1 was easily critically acclaimed with 91%. The series does not have an audience score.
Overall, critics agree that the second installment is a worthy follow-up to season 1, especially given the long ten-year gap. The new season retains much of the suspense, while Hiddleston’s performance carries the spy thriller as Jonathan undertakes a new assignment.
Although some criticisms include the slow pacing and the villain not being as sharp as Hugh Laurie’s Richard Roper, the consensus seems to be that the returning series upholds the essence of le Carré’s story.
Although it had seemed that The Night Manager would be a miniseries, it wasn’t announced until 2023 that the espionage show would make its long-awaited return. In addition to confirming season 2, Prime Video has already renewed the series for season 3.
The renewal came just a few years after le Carré died in 2020. While speaking with The New York Times, the show’s producer, Stephen Garrett, admitted that the author originally “had been absolutely emphatic that there would be no season 2.” After season 1 became a major success, however, he shared that le Carré changed his stance and gave his blessing for a follow-up if the right story was there, and even provided some ideas before his death.
Alongside Hiddleston, the returning The Night Manager stars include Olivia Colman and Noah Jupe, who plays Roper’s son. New cast members include Babylon’s Diego Chavez, Indira Varma, and Camila Morrone.
While the first episode has been released in the UK, The Night Manager season 2 will premiere on Prime Video on January 11, 2026.
