Adam Driver’s 73% Rated Biopic Box Office Flop Is Redeeming Itself by Dominating Global Streaming Charts

Adam Driver’sFerrariwas one of the biggest box office flops of 2023, but recently it’s become a sleeper hit on international streaming charts. According to FlixPatrol, the film is currently in the HBO Max Top 10 charts in 20+ countries. When it was first announced, Ferrari looked like a sure-fire hit. The film had Driver leading the cast, and it was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Michael Mann, the director behind Heatand Collateral. Mann had even worked on Ford v Ferrari as an executive producer, which only added to the hype.

The film follows the personal and professional struggles of legendary Italian car manufacturer Enzo Ferrari (Driver) during the summer of 1957. His company was facing financial collapse, so he decided to risk everything on the Mille Miglia, a dangerous 1,000-mile race across Italy. The film received praise for its acting and layered storytelling, and it still holds a 73% critics’ rating and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite that, Ferrari only made $43 million worldwide against a $95 million budget. One big reason was the heavy comparison to Ford v Ferrari. While that movie focused on racing, Mann’s Ferrari was more about the man behind the machine. Also, Ferrari himself wasn’t an easy man to like, and many viewers who remembered him as the antagonist from Ford v Ferrari didn’t rush to watch his version of the story. However, the recent F1,starring Brad Pitt, was a huge success, and HBO Max subscribers stumbling onto another sports drama with equally well-shot racing scenes are probably finding Ferrari as the next perfect watch. It’s drawing new fans every day, and the film is finally getting the love and recognition it missed in theaters.

Adam Driver Keeps Struggling at the Box Office

Driver is still one of the best and most respected actors working today, but his movies don’t seem to attract big theater crowds like they once did. In 2021, The Last Duel bombed and made only $30 million against a $100 million budget. Then came the dinosaur disaster 65, which earned $60 million worldwide on a $45 million budget but wasn’t profitable after marketing costs. His most recent big swing, Megalopolis, brought in only $14 million despite being directed by Francis Ford Coppola and costing $120 million to make. He continues to pick complex, challenging roles, and his focus on artistic projects over crowd-pleasing hits has clearly hurt his box-office pull.

Ferrari is available to stream on Hulu. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
