Although Abbott Elementary season 5, episode 11 wrapped up the show’s short-lived mall trilogy, the way that this twist ending came about was utterly unpredictable. Abbott Elementary’s cast of characters can be relied on to bring the laughs in every outing of the ABC sitcom. However, there is little else that viewers can predict about the show.
Before the sitcom went on Christmas break, Abbott Elementary season 5 shocked viewers by relocating the titular public school to a dead mall. When Abbott’s furnace broke during a winter show, the repairs to the school meant that the faculty and students needed to use a nearby disused mall as their new temporary learning hub.
Since this twist was almost overshadowed by Janine and her mother’s storyline, Abbott Elementary devoted the first three episodes of season 5’s second half to the plot. The teachers overcame all sorts of absurd obstacles to make the new setup work, although the move to the mall came with some casualties.
Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 11 Ends The Mall Trilogy
First, Ava’s secretary Dya went on vacation, as Pam Trotter’s sardonic supporting star was sick of her boss’s casual mistreatment of her. Then, a teacher quit, and it seemed like Abbott Elementary newcomer Dominic might also leave the school due to his frustration with the untenable temporary setup. Fortunately, Gregory talked him out of this.
Instead, Luke Tennie’s newcomer laid down the law with his students, and, although Gregory admitted that he himself was a little intimidated by Dominic’s sudden transformation, he argued that desperate times called for desperate measures. In season 5, episode 11, “Mall Part 3: Heroes,” the teachers learned that these desperate measures might have proven too effective.
The teachers were initially delighted when the district representative, Simon, called in with some flattering news. Since test scores were up and incident reports were down, the local paper wanted to run a front page story about Abbott’s successful transition to the mall. The teachers were delighted to see their efforts celebrated, until the new guidance counselor, Ms. Alomar, chimed in.
Unlike Abbott Elementary’s villain, Mr Morton, Ms Alomar isn’t usually a character who likes to cause trouble. As such, the faculty had to begrudgingly accept that she had a point when the guidance counselor noted that the district’s celebration of the teachers commended their efforts, but also normalized their situation.
Episode 11 Saw Janine Solve The School’s Biggest Season 5 Problem
As Alomar noted, the district effectively praised Abbott so that the teachers would stop demanding updates on when they could return to Abbott. By telling them that they were doing great, the district mollified the faculty members. Sure enough, when they visited Abbott, the teachers realized the school was no longer actively being repaired.
When Janine paired the frequently distracted student Deonte with his impeccably behaved classmate Sierra, this made her recognize the district’s plan. As she noted to an increasingly confused Gregory, the district was treating Abbott’s staff like Sierra, punishing their best efforts by leaving them abandoned in the mall for longer.
Janine, Gregory, Barbara, Ava, Jacob, and Melissa realized that the only way they would get their school back would be if they confronted Simon at the district. Thus, Abbott Elementary season 5 saw the group accost the district representative in his office, where he refused to concede that Abbott was being punished, but did admit they weren’t the district’s top priority.
Season 5 Episode 11’s Plot Introduced A Love Interest For Mr. Johnson
Simon’s admission only led the teachers to increase the pressure they put on the district, and they were soon told that they could return to Abbott within two weeks. The end of the episode saw the teachers finally back in their old building, but the return was bittersweet for one supporting star.
Mr Johnson finally received a new colleague in “Mall Part 3: Heroes,” although the pair initially struggled to see eye to eye. In a reversal of typical gender stereotypes, Mr Johnson objected to the idea of a female cleaner, and was even more horrified when she figuratively wiped the floor with him when it came to cleaning.
However, the pair’s cold détente gradually defrosted until it became clear that Mr Johnson and this new custodian had the hots for each other. This unlikely romance was prematurely ruined when the pair were told that Abbott’s staff would soon return to the old school site.
Although Mr Johnson is still Abbott Elementary season 5’s breakout star, this was an atypically sad ending for one of his wacky subplots. Hopefully, viewers may get another chance to see more from his short-lived love interest in future episodes, as the bizarre duo’s interactions were constantly funny, unpredictable, and surprisingly sweet.
However, for the foreseeable future, the gang are finally back in their usual setting, so future episodes of the ABC sitcom are likely to focus on their attempts to readjust to normal school life. As Abbott Elementary season 5 gets further into its second half, the sitcom can return to its regularly scheduled programming now that the teachers have escaped the mall.
