3 Prime Video Shows You Need to Binge This Week

Two weeks after the release of its highly anticipated series finale, Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty is extending its stay at the very top of Prime Video’s TV charts. Easily one of the streamer’s most popular shows ever, the romantic coming-of-age drama’s third and final season is still the belle of the ball on the Amazon streaming service. However, in case you’ve already finished watching the series (or if it just isn’t your cup of tea), there are still a lot more great shows to watch on the service. Here’s a look at three great shows we think you should watch this week on Prime Video, including a gorgeous gothic mystery drama that’s perfect to welcome October.

‘Schitt’s Creek’ (2015 – 2020)

Created by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian TV sitcom that follows a formerly wealthy family who are forced to start a new life in a small town they bought as a joke. The show follows their misadventures in the titular town, where their well-to-do attitudes bring them into conflict with the locals. Eugene Levy stars as the patriarch, Johnny Rose, and Dan Levy plays his fashion-obsessed son David, with Annie Murphy as his socialite sister Alexis Rose and Catherine O’Hara as Moira Rose, the family’s eccentric matriarch.

Schitt’s Creek is easily one of the most successful sitcoms of the past decade. The show had a mixed reception when it first premiered, but it earned consistently amazing reviews throughout the rest of its run, concluding with a wildly popular sixth season in 2020. A hilarious comedy anchored by the pitch-perfect performances of its talented ensemble, the show has earned nine Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes. It continues to enjoy a massive international cult following.

‘River’ (2015)

Starring Stellan Skarsgård as the titular detective, River is a British noir police procedural miniseries created and written by Abi Morgan. The six-episode show follows Detective Inspector John River, a man recently traumatized by the murder of his colleague Detective Sergeant Jackie “Stevie” Stevenson (Nicola Walker), as he struggles to navigate his troubled psychological state while solving cases alongside his new partner (Adeel Akhtar), while secretly investigating Stevie’s murder. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lesley Manville, Georgina Rich, Eddie Marsan, Turlough Convery, Sorcha Cusack, Steve Nicolson, and more.

A universally acclaimed mystery miniseries, River premiered on BBC One in October 2015, earning a warm reception from critics and viewers alike. Anchored by Skarsgård’s compelling central performance, the show presents a suspenseful, character-driven story that balances a genuinely thrilling mystery plot with complex psychological exploration. The series has received several accolades, and it’s a great watch for fans of classic noir mysteries.

‘Penny Dreadful’ (2014 – 2016)

Created by John Logan, Penny Dreadful is a horror drama series inspired by multiple characters and events from the canon of 19th-century Gothic fiction. The story begins in 1891 London, when adventurer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) set out to rescue Murray’s daughter from the clutches of a mysterious creature, with the help of Wild West showman Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and rogue scientist Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). The show also features Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Danny Sapani, Helen McCrory, and more.

A masterpiece of Gothic storytelling, Penny Dreadful draws inspiration from a number of iconic classics, including Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Oscar Wilde‘s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein. Synthesizing these canonical horrors into a thrilling new story, the show is gorgeously produced, sharply written, and full of compelling dramatic performances.
