1
‘The Better Sister’ (2025)
Created by Olivia Milch, The Better Sister is a limited thriller series based on Alafair Burke’s eponymous 2019 novel that stars Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks. The show follows estranged sisters Chloe (Biel) and Nicky (Banks), one married to and the other divorced from the same man, Adam (Corey Stoll), whose shocking murder forces them to work together to save those they love. The series also features Kim Dickens, Maxwell Acee Donovan, Bobby Naderi, Gabriel Sloyer, Matthew Modine, Lorraine Toussaint, and Gloria Reuben in supporting roles.
The Better Sister premiered in May 2025 to mixed but generally positive reviews, earning praise for Banks and Biel’s performances and chemistry. While the show’s story is a fairly familiar one, it’s still an enjoyable watch thanks to the dramatic chops of its leading duo. Biel delivers a characteristically brilliant performance, and Banks shines with one of her best roles in recent years. The combination of their talents carries the series even when the plot hits some rough patches.

‘Three Pines’ (2022)
Based on the Inspector Gamache novels by Louise Penny, Three Pines is a mystery series created by Emilia di Girolamo and starring Alfred Molina as the central detective, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec. The show follows Gamache as he investigates cases in the quiet Quebec village of Three Pines. The series also stars Rossif Sutherland, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Tantoo Cardinal, Clare Coulter, Sarah Booth, Anna Tierney, and Roberta Battaglia in supporting roles.
Presenting four fascinating cases across eight episodes, Three Pines was generally well-received by critics when it premiered in December 2022. Though it didn’t become a mainstream hit and was canceled after just one season, the series is a well-crafted and underrated anthology anchored by Molina’s central performance. A masterful adaptation that elevates its source material by incorporating important themes surrounding Canadian history and social issues, the show is a great watch for fans of classic murder mysteries, such as the works of Agatha Christie and Ann Cleeves.
3
‘The Rig’ (2023 – Present)
The first Amazon Original show filmed entirely in Scotland, The Rig is a British supernatural sci-fi thriller show created by David Macpherson. Set on an oil rig in the North Sea that’s inexplicably cut off from the mainland by an unnatural fog, the series follows a scientist (Emily Hampshire) as she investigates the occurrence, which turns increasingly dangerous as mysterious spores infect the crew members. The show’s cast is led by Hampshire and Iain Glen, with Martin Compston, Mark Bonnar, Rochenda Sandall, and more in key roles.
The Rig had a pretty mixed reception when it first premiered in January 2023, critiqued by reviewers for its cliché-ridden plot but praised for its excellent sense of atmosphere. A second season followed in January 2025, which was much better received and shows significant improvement in the writing and character development. It might not be everything it aspires to be, but the show’s compelling performances and eerie narrative make it an underwatched but enjoyable series that’s perfect for fans of isolated eco-horror thrillers.
