Before Don Cheadle entered the MCU as Tony Stark’s best friend, he was the assistant director to Tommy Lee Jones‘ character in the 1997 disaster film,Volcano. Mick Jackson directed the movie, which featured the talents of Anne Heche (Chicago P.D.), Gaby Hoffmann (The Mastermind), and Keith David (Rick and Morty), and a soundtrack composed by Avengers: Endgame‘s Alan Silvestri. Now, the movie, which generated $122 million at the global box office, will be available to stream for free next month.
On August 1, Volcano will be available to stream on Tubi. Set in Los Angeles, the film follows the aftermath of a sudden earthquake that triggers the formation of a volcano beneath the city. From there, various signs of an eruption have emerged, including increased water temperature within hours, hot gas emissions, and indications that lava is making its way to the city. While Mike Roark (Jones) coordinates efforts on the ground with various emergency services teams, Emmit Reese (Cheadle) provides assistance from HQ. After learning that a second eruption is coming, Mike devises a plan to reroute the lava to the ocean. Since its release, Volcano was poorly received by fans and critics alike. It generated an average audience critics’ score of 49% and an average audience score of 32% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Will Don Cheadle Appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
Cheadle made his MCU debut in Iron Man 2, for which he replaced Terrence Howard in the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes (aka, War Machine). Since then, he has appeared in 10 MCU projects, with the most recent being The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, What If…?, and Secret Invasion. Despite starring in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Cheadle isn’t returning to the next Avengers team-up. Avengers: Doomsday will feature a variety of returning names from the MCU, including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Simu Liu, andTom Hiddleston, but War Machine joins a list of characters that have yet to be confirmed to star in the film, like Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man, Mark Ruffalo‘s the Hulk, and Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel, just to name a few.
His absence in Avengers: Doomsday could be linked to what happened to his character in Secret Invasion. During the series finale, it was revealed that the real Rhodey had been a human prisoner in the Skrull Resistance for a very long time, with some assuming he had been missing since the events of Captain America: Civil War. Only time will tell if he will return to the MCU with this newfound knowledge.
Volcano enters Tubi on August 1, 2025.
