Warning! Spoilers ahead for Supernatural #1!
Supernaturalis back, and some fans think the franchise has already introduced the great lost love of Dean Winchester’s life. Others suspect that Steff “Effie” Windler might be Supernatural’s next great antagonist. Of course, it’s totally possible those two things are not mutually exclusive, considering the Winchester brothers’ dating history.
Supernatural #1 is written by Greg Pak, with art by Eder Messias. The issue introduces “Effie,” and in characteristic Dean fashion, the older Winchester brother immediately strikes up a flirtatious dynamic with her.
By the end of the issue, she’s revealed to be more nefarious than she initially let on, but that doesn’t mean a romance with Dean is off the table.
Supernatural Natural Fans Think The Franchise Has Big Things In Store For New Character “Effie Windler”
Supernatural #1, Written By Greg Pak; Art By Eder Messias; Available Now From Dynamite Entertainment
In Supernatural #1, Dean and Sam investigate the spontaneous human combustion of an employee for Windler Breweries. “Effie,” a young blonde woman, introduces herself as an employee at the brewery and quickly inserts herself into the brothers’ demon hunt. This is Season 1 Dean, and so naturally, he is immediately attracted to her.
And just as naturally, she turns out to be using the still-inexperienced monster hunters. Effie turns out to be Windler’s CEO, and by the end of Supernatural #1, she sacrifices her soul in order to capture an “imp” in order to harness its demonic powers. Effie and the Winchesters part ways after that, but readers already suspect she’ll be back.
The Supernatural franchise featured its share of memorable doomed romances. As such, fans who have already started ‘shipping Effie and Dean after reading Supernatural #1 aren’t advocating for them to hook up because they want the couple to be endgame, but rather because of the potential for drama and tragedy that the pairing has to offer before an inevitable breakup.
Effie Windler Could Be A Major Antagonist Or A Romantic Foil For Dean Winchester, Or Maybe Both
Either Way, Supernatural Fans Expect To See More Of Effie
Prior to the release of Supernatural #1, author Greg Pak teased the introduction of an overarching villain for the series, one who fans will “hate and love.” There’s a strong possibility Effie Windler could turn out to be that villain. Her introduction positions her as smart, charismatic, and completely amoral.
She is also now soulless, having willingly embraced the powers of hell in exchange for earthly gain. She certainly fits the bill for an antagonist that readers love to hate. The question is whether Dean could still end up hating how much he loves her. Making Supernatural’s new “Big Bad” Dean’s love interest would certainly be a fun complication for the series.
Supernatural #1 was a solid standalone story, which reintroduced the Season 1-era version of Sam and Dean. However, fans are already digging into it for potentially significant lore implications, and the leading theories center around Effie, suggesting that she could have a major role to play as the series progresses.
