14 Years Later, Henry Cavill’s Forgotten ‘300’ Replacement Quietly Returns to Streaming

Henry Cavill’s role as Superman will certainly endure the test of time as one of his most iconic performances, but 14 years ago, he starred in a sword and sandal fantasy adventure that’s finally returned to streaming. Cavill stars alongside Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2) and Stephen Dorff (True Detective) in Immortals, the 2011 action epic telling the story of Theseus (Cavill), a mortal man hand-picked by Zeus (Luke Evans) to lead the charge against the ruthless King Hyperion (Rourke). Immortals had been absent from streaming for some months now, but the film quietly joined the Starz library recently, where it’s now streaming for all subscribers.

Immortals was not well-liked by critics or audiences upon release. Even all these years later, the film still holds Rotten scores of 50% from the former and only 49% from the latter on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. These poor reviews didn’t stop Cavill’s fantasy epic from earning a fortune at the box office, though. The film grossed a whopping $226 million against a $75 million budget, placing it safely in the profit range. The film famously drew comparisons to Gerard Butler‘s 300 upon release, largely due to the sword & sandal elements at play along with the stunning action present in both films.

Tarsem Singh directed Immortals with a script from Charles Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides. Four years after he directed Immortals, Singh teamed up with Ryan Reynolds for Self/less, the critically panned sci-fi thriller that’s currently streaming on Netflix. He’s also famous for his work on The Fall, the 2006 fairy tale adventure starring Lee Pace that’s streaming on Mubi.

Why Isn’t Henry Cavill the Witcher Anymore?

After three seasons of playing Geralt of Rivia, Henry Cavill has now passed his sword to Liam Hemsworth, who will play The Witcher in the final two seasons of the hit Netflix fantasy show. For years, fans speculated about the reason for Cavill’s departure, with some citing that he left because he thought he was going to work on Superman, and others citing creative differences. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich recently spoke out about this ahead of the Season 4 premiere, seemingly confirming that it’s a mixture of both. She said Cavill had other things he wanted to work on, and they didn’t want to work with someone who didn’t want to be there.
