Released near the height of HBO’s Game of Thrones‘ popularity, debuting at the box office in the middle of Season 6, the fantasy action adventure Warcraft split critics and audiences down the middle. Based on the video game series of the same name, the movie earned harsh backlash from critics who gave it a 29% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, dubbing it a “sluggish and derivative adaptation.” However, audiences differed, awarding a strong 76% rating on the same review site.
Ten years on, and Warcraft has found its way back into the streaming charts, officially finishing in the top ten on Prime Video at the time of writing. Starring Travis Fimmel, Ben Foster, Toby Kebbell, Ruth Negga, and Paula Patton, Warcraft was directed by Duncan Jones, five years after his hugely successful sci-fi effort with Jake Gyllenhaal: Source Code. Despite receiving critical backlash, Warcraft was an unquestionable hit at the box office, earning an enormous $439 million from a reported budget of $160 million. Split between a domestic haul of $47 million and a massive $392 million in international revenue, the film finished 2016 as the 18th highest-grossing movie worldwide. A synopsis reads:
“Looking to escape from his dying world, the orc shaman Gul’dan utilizes dark magic to open a portal to the human realm of Azeroth. Supported by the fierce fighter Blackhand, Gul’dan organizes the orc clans into a conquering army called the Horde. Uniting to protect Azeroth from these hulking invaders are King Llane, the mighty warrior Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) and the powerful wizard Medivh. As the two races collide, leaders from each side start to question if war is the only answer.”
Another Video Game Adaptation is Topping the Same Streaming Charts
Warcraft isn’t the only video game adaptation on the Prime Video streaming charts. Amid its hugely successful second season, with both critics and fans in agreement on its triumph, the Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell-led Fallout sits prettily atop the streaming charts without much serious competition. The series has currently spent over a month at the top, with that set to continue as the series runs until its February 4 finale. The most-watched movie on the platform right now is the Jason Statham-led sharksploitation sequel, Meg 2: The Trench.
Warcraft is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Prime Video. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
