It’s been 12 years since Matt Smith last played the Doctor in the BBC seriesDoctor Who. According to former writer Steven Moffat, while the actor has been involved in huge projects like House of the Dragon, Smith has expressed interest in returning to the Doctor Who set.
RadioTimes reported that Moffat appeared in Doctor Who: Unleashed, where he shared his recent WhatsApp conversation with the former actor he has worked with since 2010. He revealed that after Smith learned it had been 15 years since his first appearance, the actor replied that he wished he was on the Doctor Who set. This is when the former showrunner “begged” him to return.
“Today, as I sit here, is the 15th anniversary of when the 11th Doctor fell to Earth and ate fish custard. I WhatsApp’d Matt this morning saying it was 15 years, and he said, ‘I wish I was on that set now’. See? You see, Matt? Don’t leave.”
Even if Smith is no longer in the show, Doctor Who has a long history of bringing former actors to the British Science Fiction series. One prominent example is David Tennant, who has played the lead role since 2005, regenerated to Smith’s Doctor in 2010, and returned for a handful of specials, such as the 50th Anniversary and 2023’s three-part specials as the Fourteenth Doctor, before regenerating as Ncuti Gatwa‘s Doctor.
What Happened During Matt Smith’s Era Of ‘Doctor Who’?
Smith starred in Doctor Who from 2010 to 2013 and was described as the “youngest actor” to play the Doctor throughout the franchise’s history. In addition to Doctor Who, the actor has appeared in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, where he reunited with classic-era companions Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Jo Grant (Katy Manning).
After the 10th Doctor regenerated in “The End of Time – Part Two,” The Eleventh Doctor started his journey with Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), who he first met as a young child but reunited with her years later as an adult. Alongside her fiancé, Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), the trio traveled across time and space, facing various foes and crossing paths with River Song (Alex Kingston), an ally of the Doctor who first appeared during Tennant’s era in 2008.
Amy and Rory stayed as the Doctor’s companions for two seasons. They were eventually replaced by Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) in 2013, during the second half of Season 7. The Doctor took her in as he tried to find out why he kept meeting this person at different points, calling her the “impossible girl.” Clara continued to travel with the Doctor after he regenerated into the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi).
