Hulu recently dropped the first teaser for All’s Fair, its new Ryan Murphy-produced legal drama. But the immediate reaction wasn’t just excitement – it was confusion. Yes, the cast is filled with big names like Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, and Sarah Paulson. But Kim Kardashian is also one of the leading stars. That’s the same Kim who once released the so-bad-it’s-good song “Jam (Turn It Up)” and whose most iconic line is “Don’t be f***ing rude.” Now, she’s playing the world’s most expensive divorce attorney.
The new show, which will premiere this fall, follows an all-female team of cutthroat divorce lawyers who break off from a male-dominated firm to start their own practice. The trailer leans into the drama and is a mix of think stilettos, sharp retorts, and even sharper cross-examinations. Murphy has described it as a love child between Sex and the City and The Practice. But while the writing may be gripping (only time will tell), so far, one of the main questions is how Kim got a starring role in the first place.
Why Kim’s Casting Raises Suspicion
This isn’t Kim’s first foray into acting, but her performances have been met with lukewarm reviews at best. Her monotone delivery in American Horror Storydrew criticism, with some fans threatening to boycott the show. Kim admitted to taking acting lessons and defended her performance even when backlash intensified.
What makes Kim’s role in All’s Fair feel ironic is that she’s spent the last few years (very publicly) working toward becoming a lawyer – a process that, at times, feels like it’s been more of a brand campaign than bar prep. Though she passed the baby bar exam in California, she never actually attended law school and hasn’t practiced law. So far, legal education has largely played out on reality TV.

“It’s very exciting, very new, very excellent.”
There’s also been speculation Kim has paused law school, or quit altogether, as she hasn’t provided any updates on her progress recently. If it wasn’t performing well as a storyline – The Kardashians has been struggling with ratings for a while now – it may no longer be a priority for Kim. And given that she’s starring in a new TV show while managing her businesses, filming for The Kardashians, and raising four kids, perhaps her acting career is taking precedence over law school.
While Kim’s legal background somehow makes her casting feel fitting, it may also be her taking the easy way out – she gets to play a lawyer on TV without ever putting in the hard work to become a real one.
The Role Was Basically Written for Kim
Kim’s casting in All’s Fair didn’t come out of nowhere. The project was announced on The Kardashians in 2024 when Ryan pitched the idea directly to Kim and her mom Kris Jenner. It was clear Kim’s casting wasn’t an afterthought. The role was written with her in mind. Ryan even joked, “Not only am I a lawyer, but I play one on TV,” a line Kim instantly embraced. Now, a year later, the new trailer seems to confirm what many fans could already see – this was always a huge PR move to turn Kim into a legitimate TV star. One more point that is also worth mentioning momager, Kris Jenner, serves as one of the executive producers on the series.
Even Kim has acknowledged the project feels out of her scope, admitting she took it on because it felt like a “challenge.”
“I know I don’t need to add another thing to my schedule or another TV show, but it’s so different than what I do and it’s such a challenge for me,” she said in a The Kardashians confessional “I love the challenge, so I just want to see this out.”
Kim has proven time and time again that she can dominate reality TV. She’s turned being herself into an empire. from fashion lines, beauty brands, and even a shapewear company (that’s literally worth billions). So, perhaps her casting in a serious starring role shouldn’t be so surprising. If Kim can keep our attention in a scene about organizing a pantry, why not in a courtroom showdown?
