One of Smoke’s cast members weighed in on a major question following the show’s Season 1 conclusion. The star addressed the possibility of a second season and shared where things currently stand regarding the show’s future.
Hannah Emily Anderson on if Smoke Season 2 could happen
Hannah Emily Anderson addressed the possibility of Smoke Season 2 in a recent interview with ScreenRant. When asked about a potential return, she stated, “I would love to go back,” calling the project “a dream to work on” with Dennis Lehane and Taron Egerton. However, she clarified, “I haven’t heard anything” about a second season being in development.
Anderson added that “the first season stands alone really well,” though she remains open to the show continuing. She reflected on the experience, saying, “When I was reading the scripts, I was tearing through them and I also was kind of blown away by the ending.” She concluded, “I don’t know whether or not to keep the hope alive, but even if it doesn’t go again, I feel like the first season really stands alone really well.”
Dennis Lehane developed Smoke, drawing inspiration from the Firebug podcast. The series stars Taron Egerton as arson investigator Dave Gudsen and Jurnee Smollett as Detective Michelle Calderone. In the Season 1 finale, Michelle arrests Dave after discovering he is the serial arsonist. The story ends with a vision of Ashley (played by Hannah Emily Anderson) and her son Emmett boxing up Dave’s belongings.
Lehane had suggested plans for three Seasons, but no official renewal has followed. Five months have passed since the Season 1 finale, and Apple TV has yet to announce a follow-up. The streamer typically moves quickly on renewals for continuing series. Lehane, Egerton, and Apple TV also found success with limited series like Black Bird.
Anderson portrayed Ashley, Dave’s third wife, whose relationship with him worsens over time. While Season 1 wrapped many character arcs, Ashley and Emmett could still return. A second Season could include scenes involving court proceedings or prison visits.
