One of the Most Influential Sci-Fi Series Ever Lands on Netflix Ahead of Revival

Before a long-awaited reboot, it is common practice to rewatch the original that started it all. The classic science fiction franchise, Stargate,is poised for a major series revival on Prime Video in the near future. Its critically acclaimed 1997 sci-fi series, Stargate SG-1, ahead of the reboot, is returning to Netflix on February 15, 2026. The franchise was born on the back of the 1994 film, Stargate, which is one of those films which seems to get better appreciation from fans as time passes. Stargate SG-1 returns to Netflix following the decision in late 2022 to remove all 10 seasons of the first TV show in the franchise and shift them to Prime Video following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. For a decade, the sci-fi series aired on several networks, including Showtime, Sci Fi Channel, and Sky1. Beginning in 1997 to 2007.

While Stargate SG-1 begins one year after the events of Stargate and progresses the story that began in the 1994 film. The stage was different when the TV show premiered, as the main roles were recast from their originals. Richard Dean Anderson did not return and was replaced by Kurt Russell as Jack O’Neill. The other major casting change was James Spader, who also didn’t return, and was replaced by Michael Shanks, who played Daniel Jackson, the intelligent Egyptologist. Russell’s O’Neill is an Air Force colonel in charge of the military operation that has since assumed control of the Stargate. Shanks’ Egyptologist travels through the gate in the film. The character would go on to be the series’ moral compass. One year short of three decades later, the story and the characters still endure, and Stargate is primed to be resurrected once more. Thus, the arrival of the flagship series on Netflix offers fans the opportunity to refresh their minds.

The Original ‘Stargate’ Film Helped Launch a Major Franchise

Created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, Stargate SG-1 kicks off one year after the original movie as a direct continuation of Roland Emmerichand Dean Devlin’s 1994 film. It follows the titular SG-1 military team from Earth as they travel to distant planets using an alien portal. Part of their operations includes exploration of the galaxy and searching for alien technology and allies to defend Earth against other alien threats. The success of the sci-fi series helped spawn a beloved franchise with spin-offs such as Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins. There was also the animated series Stargate Infinity, as well as direct-to-DVD films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, among other franchise-related products.

Besides Russell and Shanks, the cast of Stargate SG-1 included Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Don S. Davis, Corin Nemec, Ben Browder, Beau Bridges, Claudia Black, among many others. News of Prime Video is developing a new Stargate series after all this time, making the return of Stargate SG-1 to Netflix even more interesting. However, plot details and cast members remain firmly under wraps for what has been described as an entirely new chapter in the sci-fi franchise.

All 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 will begin streaming on Netflix starting on February 15, 2026.
