The new Steal series on Amazon Prime Video featured several suspense-driven elements and a major plot twist that capped off its premise. What began as a ruthless heist ultimately unfolded into a much larger conspiracy. However, the biggest reveal centered on the identity of the mastermind behind the operation. Below is a breakdown of who orchestrated the heist and why.
Who orchestrated the heist in Prime Video’s Steal?
The finale of Sophie Turner-led Steal delivered several major developments. This included a physical confrontation that saw Zara, played by Sophie Turner, face one of the original robbers, Morgan. Luke and Rhys were also involved in the altercation. The incident ended with Rhys being shot. Zara later killed Morgan by using a taser on his neck with a lethal amount of electricity.
Following these events, Steal revealed the biggest secret of the series, the identity of the mastermind behind the operation.
The finale confirmed that Darren Yoshida, the financial investigator assigned to the heist, was also the architect behind it. Rhys explained that there was a pattern in which Darren received privileged information that also reached the robbers. Yoshida, who was known for never turning down cases, had declined two other cases specifically to take this one on.
Yoshida described his motive as staging a “fireworks show” to expose systemic corruption. He did not keep the stolen money and instead returned it. However, he routed the funds through tax havens to publicly expose offshore accounts belonging to 32 major celebrities and powerful figures. He achieved his goals by showing how the system was rigged against the majority of people.
“Our system doesn’t work for 99% of us,” he says in the finale, “yet we’re all forced to pay into it, except for the ones at the very top. The only ones who really benefit from all this are the ones who choose to opt out. And tax havens are how they do it.”
Ultimately, Rhys turns Darren in after Zara convinces him to reject Darren’s bribe.
All the episodes of Steal are now streaming on Prime Video.
