Summons are a big part of the Final Fantasy franchise, and even though their presence in Final Fantasy 7 Remake is somewhat diminished, they still play a big role in combat, often changing the tide of battles in your favor. Compared to the recent Final Fantasy 16, where summons (therein known as Eikons) play a pivotal role in the story itself, summons in the remake of the seventh main entry are only really used to fend off enemies. This is an inheritance from the original Final Fantasy 7.
The remake series is still incomplete, and more summons are being added to the trilogy with every game. However, even in the first remake installment, you can obtain several different and classic summons to use in battle. Some are obtained naturally through the Final Fantasy 7 Remake campaign, while others are locked behind specific actions you must take during your playthrough.
How To Get Ifrit Materia
This Is The First Summon You Unlock In The Story
Ifrit is the first summon you’ll unlock in the game, though you can, technically speaking, have access to other Summoning Materias before it. Even so, Ifrit is given to you as a summon in Final Fantasy 7 Remake as part of a tutorial for the mechanic. During Chapter 3’s The Jessie Job, Jessie will seek you out and ask for Cloud’s assistance.
During this questline, which will see you escort the Avalanche members to the Sector 7 Employee Housing Area, you’ll receive the Ifrit Summoning Materia for free. At this point, you’ll be taught how to equip a Summoning Materia and how to use it in combat.
How To Get Carbuncle Materia
Carbuncle Is A Healing Summon
One of the first Summoning Materias you can pick up, even before Ifrit, is Carbuncle. This Summoning Materia, however, is not rewarded through gameplay. Instead, it’s a bonus that can be claimed from your extra download rewards if you purchase the Digital Deluxe version of the game.
There is currently no other way of obtaining Carbuncle in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It’s worth noting that Carbuncle is the only summon whose role is 100% pivoted toward support and healing, so it’s a great Summoning Materia to have if you’re struggling with keeping your party alive through other means.
How To Get Cactuar Materia
This FF7 Remake Summon Deals A Load Of Damage
Similar to Carbuncle, the Cactuar Summoning Materia can only be obtained through a specific purchase. However, you can obtain it by purchasing any type of Deluxe Edition of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. As such, if you purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll be able to obtain both summons in a single pack.
Especially for the early portion of the game, Cactuar is a good summon to have, as it can deal a lot of damage against the targeted enemy. It’s far from being the best summon in the game, but it’s still a good creature referencing a classic monster from the series.
How To Get Chocobo Chick Materia
This Summon Is A Pre-Order Bonus
The Chocobo Chick is the final summon in Final Fantasy 7 Remake that is locked behind a purchase option. You can only gain access to its Summoning Materia if you purchase the game during its pre-order period, as it is specifically a pre-order bonus. Like the Carbuncle and Cactuar, you can claim the materia before you actually get Ifrit.
Chocobo Chick is a powerful summon, especially for the early stages of the game, as it can deal different types of elemental damage in AoE (area of effect). It’s a great way of getting in elemental damage, particularly when you don’t have a full party in FF7 Remake with a good spread of materia.
How To Get Chocobo & Moogle Materia
Get This Summon Via A Side Quest
Chocobo & Moogle is another summon you can unlock fairly early on in the game, but you’ll have to venture down the road less traveled to get it. You can’t obtain its Summoning Materia via the campaign. Instead, you’ll need to complete the Inside the Ventilation Fan during Chapter 6.
The whole quest is centered around the Summoning Materia, as it is seen behind a ventilation fan, but seemingly inaccessible. You’ll need to find your way around the area to reach the Chocobo & Moogle Summoning Materia, and once you do, you can equip and use it.
How To Get Shiva Materia
The Summon Is Locked Behind Battle Intel
Shiva, one of the original summons from Final Fantasy, can also be obtained in FF7 Remake. To do so, you’ll be required to progress through the Battle Intel feature guided by Chadley until you unlock Combat Simulation: Shiva.
The goal in this Chadley VR Mission is to defeat Shiva as an enemy. If you are able to do so, the reward is Shiva’s Summoning Materia, which will allow you to use the summon in battle, dealing ice damage to enemies.
How To Get Fat Chocobo Materia
This FF7 Remake Summon Deals Non-Elemental Damage
Fat Chocobo is the next Summoning Materia you can unlock via Chadley’s VR Missions, though it’s worth noting you’ll have to continue progressing through the Battle Intel ranks to unlock it.
As you did with Shiva, you’ll have to beat Fat Chocobo in battle. After that, you’ll unlock it as a summon for your party. Fat Chocobo deals a large load of non-elemental damage when summoned onto the field.
How To Get Leviathan
Progress Through Battle Intel
After progressing further down the Battle Intel ranks, you’ll unlock the Combat Simulation: Leviathan task, which will see you face the classic summon in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Like Shiva and Fat Chocobo before it, face it in battle.
Beating Leviathan will net you the Leviathan Summoning Materia. Despite its connection to water as the Sea King, Leviathan deals non-elemental damage in the game. Its Materia grants the user a load of magical bonuses, making it great for characters like Aerith in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
How To Get Bahamut Materia
The Most Popular Summon Is The Final One
The most popular of all summons in the game, Bahamut, is expected to be the final one you obtain. In the main game, Combat Simulation: Bahamut is the last entry in Chadley’s VR Missions. This is a tough fight, but a worthwhile one.
Bahamut deals extremely powerful non-elemental attacks against enemies when used as a summon. Be sure to complete Battle Intel as you progress through the campaign, as it can be decisive during your final battle in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
How To Get Ramuh Materia
The Summon Is Exclusive To Episode INTERmission
Ramuh is a late addition to FF7 Remake, and you cannot actually obtain it through the base game. Instead, you’ll have to venture through Episode INTERmission, the content focused on Yuffie in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
You’ll need to face Ramuh in the Combat Simulation: Ramuh task in Chadley’s VR Missions as early as Chapter 1 of Episode INTERmission. The classic summon deals Lightning damage to enemies and is a great perk to boast during battles in Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Episode INTERmission.
