On The Young and the Restless, alliances rarely stay simple, and Cane’s connection with Phyllis is a perfect example. Actor Billy Flynn says their dynamic is unpredictable and a lot of fun to play. As Cane pushes toward his bigger goals, Phyllis has become both a powerful ally and a ‘wild card,’ one Cane believes he can control, at least for now.
Billy Flynn teases Cane’s plans for Phyllis on The Young and the Restless
Flynn said sharing the screen with Michelle Stafford has been one of the best parts of this storyline. He explained that their scenes aren’t tightly mapped out; they just let things happen naturally. Flynn loves her working style and added that kind of spontaneity keeps every moment feeling real and unpredictable. “I love the way that she works. It’s ultimately the way I work, which is sort of just spontaneous,” he explained (via Soap Opera Digest).
Even though Cane and Phyllis seem like a strange pairing, Flynn believes they connect because they both see themselves as outsiders. Cane, Phyllis, and Billy Abbott are all playing from the sidelines, trying to fix broken situations in their own ways. While they’re chasing similar goals, Flynn says Phyllis takes a far more reckless approach. She’s “more of an anarchist” when it comes to getting things done.
Flynn thinks Cane genuinely wants to do the right thing, but he won’t hesitate to get his hands dirty if the situation calls for it. That’s exactly why Phyllis fits into his plan. Cane doesn’t always love her methods, but he’s willing to ignore the red flags because she gets results. In his eyes, she’s “ a wild card” he can play when he needs leverage.
“And you’ll see moments as we move forward where it’s clear he’s not going to stop her, because I think ultimately, he’s using what she is to his benefit right now. She’s just his wild card that is kind of a means to an end,” Flynn said.
