Avengers: Doomsday Opening Scene Predictions: 5 Epic Possibilities

A great opening sequence is key to capturing the audience’s attention for any movie. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done its best to deliver some excellent ones over the years, with Avengers: Doomsday hoping to do the same. The Russo brothers’ involvement should help, as they are responsible for Avengers: Infinity War‘s epic start, as well as Avengers: Endgame‘s emotional beginning.

That’s part of the reason why the subject of Avengers: Doomsday‘s opening scene has already started to generate buzz 11 months before we’ll even see it — assuming it wasn’t in any of the four Doomsday trailers. With so much still officially unknown about the movie, there’s plenty of room for speculation to run rampant about this topic.

Some exciting possibilities can be imagined for how the next Avengers movie starts. Here are a few I’ve thought about, but share your ideas in the comments, too!

Doctor Doom’s Backstory

Franklin Richards with Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four: First Steps

It’d make a lot of sense for Avengers: Doomsday to start with a focus on Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in some capacity. The movie needs to get audiences up to speed on the MCU’s new big bad as quickly as possible, as he doesn’t have the benefit of prior minor roles or cameos like Thanos did.

That’s why Doomsday could start with its villain’s backstory. The tragedy that’s driving RDJ’s character should be central to the film, and establishing that from the get-go will help viewers completely understand what he wants and why he’s doing whatever he has planned.

Seeing Doom’s origin would give RDJ a potentially meaty scene to sink his teeth into from the jump, too, which could help audiences differentiate his new MCU role from Iron Man.

With theories suggesting that Steve Rogers’ multiversal travels in Endgame are somehow responsible for Doom’s origin, seeing the disastrous impact of what was previouslyseen as a happy ending for Chris Evans’ character would also reshape previous MCU events. Watching Doom’s family die because of Steve’s actions, for instance, would set up a great rivalry between them for the movie to focus on.

Steve Rogers Returning The Infinity Stones

Marvel has already communicated how big of a role Steve will have in Doomsday. He was the star of the first and most-watched teaser, and the Russos have positioned him as the lead character. It’s made it clear that Steve’s conclusion in Endgame is pivotal to what happens next.

That’s why it could make sense for Doomsday to begin by revealing the multiversal mission that ties these stories together. Steve returning the Infinity Stones is something many have been clamoring to see since Endgame wrapped up, with suggestions it could support an entire Disney+ show often coming from fans.

That never happened, but the idea could be useful as the opening scene for Doomsday. It’d deliver a much-requested sequence more significantly. If this adventure and getting his life with Peggy Carter did start a multiversal collapse, each attempt to close a branched reality could actually be what leads to him suiting up again.

Captain America’s New Avengers Team Assembles

Another idea I really like is that, rather than focus on Doom or even Steve, the Avengers team gets the spotlight at the start of Doomsday. We know Sam Wilson/Captain America has been assembling a new team, but the MCU has failed to have them interact and work together prior to the upcoming event film.

It’d be great if Doomsday begins with a full introduction to the new version of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While much of the movie connects to previous eras for Marvel movies, having the Avengers take center stage at last in Phase 6 could show that they are already an active, assembled roster by the time this film starts, rather than wasting time showing them coming together.

As for what they’d be doing exactly, partaking in some heroic duties is all that is really needed. The excitement would come from seeing Captain America, Falcon, Ant-Man, Shang-Chi, and any other members fighting side-by-side, showing how formidable they are before Doom’s arrival.

Doctor Doom Kills A Major Marvel Character

One of the most popular beliefs about Doomsday‘s opening scene is that it will mirror Infinity War‘s. After Thanos beat Hulk into hiding and killed Loki, the Russos could use a similar concept and have Doom kill a significant character to showcase his threat level and powers.

As for who this would be, there are multiple options. The multiverse opens up practically every possibility. Doom killing a version of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would be epic. Laying waste to the Council of Kangs is a fan-favorite idea, but one that seems unlikely.

He could even kill an Iron Man variant (allowing RDJ to fight and slay himself) or slaughter a version of Thor or Steve, too. Ripping out Thanos’ spine would bring a panel from Jonathan Hickman’s “Secret Wars #8” to life in a memorable way.

Rather than rely solely on multiversal variants that don’t fully pertain to the plot, Doomsday could have Doom kill someone like Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey to bring the X-Men universe into the mix and create a very personal vendetta against Victor.

An Incursion On Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Universe

For as important as it is for Doomsday to establish Doctor Doom early on, the same is true of the multiversal stakes at play. The threat of incursions has been seeded in previous MCU projects, but general audiences may not remember (or skipped over) those plot points. Showing what an incursion is and its disastrous nature would be a smart way to start the next Avengers film.

This could be done by showing any random universe collapsing, but the opening scene would be a lot more effective if it involved characters audiences know and love. That’s why having Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe as the one in danger would be so brilliant.

The movie could start with a return to that universe and show a glimpse of Peter’s life after Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, rather than it being an average day for him, his entire world would suddenly be at risk of being completely destroyed. Viewers would emotionally connect to such a sequence, and it’d also surely pack enough action to entertain.

This would also position Maguire’s Spider-Man to appear later on in Doomsday or even in Avengers: Secret Wars, assuming he finds a way to survive the incursion. If this is the scene and Marvel avoids officially confirming Maguire’s involvement, the cheers that would come with his Spider-Man’s return would only add to the excitement this scene would generate as Avengers: Doomsday begins.
