Fallout has just hinted at who exactly the real enemy will be in the series, and it creates a huge rift from the video games. While Fallout is generally a faithful adaptation of the Fallout universe, with the story following a different vault than has previously been seen in the series, they are beginning to make some bold changes as the show gains momentum.
For the most part, that isn’t a big issue, though those with a deep knowledge of the video games have had the upper hand in being able to predict how certain things would play out. But with one of the most notable factions in the Wasteland undergoing a major shift in the show, Fallout is breaking new ground and could soon be rewriting the story that appears in future games.
Fallout Is Setting The Enclave Up To Be The Central Antagonist
In Fallout season 1, we meet Siggi Wilzig, a scientist who worked for the Enclave before defecting from the organization and taking the cold fusion technology in order to bring it to Lee Moldaver. Now, in the games, the Enclave is an organization that is believed to have been wiped out, but season 2 of Fallout appears to be changing the narrative.
In episode 6, the Super Mutant, played by Ron Perlman, reveals that the Enclave is responsible for creating the Super Mutants, which means they created the Forced Evolutionary Virus, FEV, which also created the Deathclaws. But in the games, the Enclave was not involved in creating FEV, and they vehemently despised mutants of any kind.
The Super Mutants Are Preparing For War With The Enclave
Fallout appears to maintain the idea that the Enclave hates mutants and now wants them destroyed, as stated by the Super Mutant, but it’s certainly a shift from the source material that will have bigger implications, such as setting the Enclave up to be the primary antagonistic organization in the series.
While this is unlikely to come to fruition in the last two episodes of season 2, the storyline will almost certainly carry over into season 3, when the Super Mutants can gather their forces together and begin an all-out war with the Enclave. However, the Enclave needs to step out of the shadows before this can happen.
Norm MacLean’s FEV Discovery Will Send Him On A Different Path To His Sister Lucy
Thus far, Lucy MacLean is clearly the central hero of the series, but her mission has taken her on a journey of discovery about who her father really is, and uncovering the secrets of the Wasteland as it is today. Meanwhile, her brother Norm stayed behind in the Vault, only managing to break free early in season 2.
Now that Norm is on the surface, he has begun to seek answers of his own, but he is starting down a different path from his sister as he learns about the Forced Evolutionary Virus. This will likely lead Norm to uncover secrets about the Enclave before his sister, which could eventually see them reunited down the line in Fallout season 3 or beyond.
