Audiences Can’t Stop Watching Netflix’s New 82% RT Action Thriller That “Hooks You From the Start”

Netflix just dropped one of its strongest action thrillers in recent memory, and viewers are already treating it like required weekend viewing. The film features an all-star cast, including one of Hollywood’s most reliable on-screen pairings: Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Add a stacked supporting cast, a high-stakes premise, and tight pacing, and it’s no surprise audiences are locked in. If you’ve been keeping even half an eye on Netflix’s new releases, you probably know exactly which movie we’re talking about: The Rip.

The Rip follows Damon and Affleck as two Miami cops who, along with several colleagues, stumble upon an enormous stash of criminal cash. What starts as a seemingly routine bust quickly spirals into something far more dangerous when the group decides to keep the money for themselves. As word spreads and pressure mounts, trust inside the unit begins to crack — and not everyone makes it out clean. The official synopsis reads:

“Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.”

The cast also includes Steven Yeun as Detective Mike Ro, Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste, Sasha Calle as Desiree “Desi” Molina, Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar, Scott Adkins as FBI Agent Del Byrne, Kyle Chandler as DEA Agent Mateo “Matty” Nix, Néstor Carbonell as Major Thom Vallejo, Lina Esco as Captain Jackie Velez, Jose Pablo Cantillo as DEA Agent Dayo Reyes, Cliff Chamberlain as Officer Junger, Alex Hernandez as Officer Warwick, and Daisuke Tsuji as FBI Agent Logan Casiano.

How Good Is ‘The Rip’?

Despite the Rotten Tomatoes score, Collider’s Robert Taylor felt that Affleck and Damon were “phoning it in” in a “by the book” thriller:

I’m not a Miami cop, so it could be faux authenticity as far as I know, but the characters in The Rip do speak a certain way and carry themselves in a manner that feels true to the dingy, dangerous world it builds out. The story it’s all in service of likely wouldn’t support a two-plus-hour film, but, thankfully, The Rip cuts to credits right at the hour-and-45-minute mark. Just like the T.N.T. itself, this movie wants to get in, get the job done without complication, and get out before it overstays its welcome. On that front, The Rip is solid enough to earn a mild recommendation.
