‘Doctor Who’ Star Delivers Her Verdict on the Show’s Uncertain Future Amid Cancellation Fears

After an eye-catching Christmas Day line-up in 2024, December 25 felt much emptier in 2025 on the BBC, thanks in part to the lack of a Doctor Who festive special. After months of uncertainty, it was finally revealed that the timey-wimey series, helmed by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies, would return for Christmas 2026. However, the exact details of the show’s future beyond this point, following the break-up of a disappointing partnership with Disney, are still unknown, despite confirmation that the future of the Beeb will include the series in some form.

In response to the recent pivotal moments in Doctor Who‘s time vortex, former star Mandip Gill has weighed in on her stance on the show’s future, saying in an interview, “It will come back.” She continued, “Have you seen how long it’s been going on? And the great thing about the people who watch Doctor Who is they’re so open to change, which is why it can keep regenerating every couple of years.” Gill added, “So I have no doubt that it’ll come back, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and more exciting.” In reference to the central star of the show, which was last seen as Billie Piper despite uncertainty around her position as the titular Time Lord, Gill said:

“But I’ve always said there’s only a certain amount of people, I think, that can play the Doctor. I think it takes a certain type of person. I’m sure they’ll get it right, but it’ll be so interesting, even for us ‘inside’, to find out who it is. And I’m sure they’ll have an amazing time.”

The Newest ‘Doctor Who’ Spin-Off Arrives in the U.S. This Year

As many British shows do, the latest Doctor Who spin-off, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea, has already debuted across the pond without yet premiering in the U.S. Starring Russell Tovey as the unlikely ambassador for the Earth when tensions arise between humanity and an aquatic species, the series has so far debuted to positive reviews, earning an impressive 86% score from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. A synopsis for the series reads, “With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

The most recent Doctor Who is available on Disney+. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates.
