Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Avatar: Fire & Ash
Avatar: Fire & Ash delivers some of the franchise’s biggest and most action-packed moments yet. However, one of the best Spider moments is easy to miss in this latest chapter of James Cameron’s major sci-fi epic.
The adopted human member of the Sully Family, Miles “Spider” Socorro (played by Jack Champion) receives a much bigger arc and physical evolution in Avatar: Fire & Ash compared to 2023’s The Way of Water. That said, one of the best Spider details in Fire & Ash is pretty subtle.
Miles “Spider” Socorro Receives A Major Evolution in Avatar: Fire & Ash
Through Kiri’s unique connection to Eywa, Fire & Ash sees the young Na’vi bonding mycelium to Spider, altering his biology at a cellular level. This allows Spider to breathe Pandora’s air without a mask, a monumental step toward true belonging. He also develops his own queue, allowing him to physically bond with the planet’s neural network just like the Na’vi.
This transformation is a pretty huge deal, not only for Spider personally, who was raised by the Na’vi, but for all of humanity living on Pandora. After all, such a game-changing evolution would be incredibly valuable to the RDA, who do attempt to reverse engineer the process by capturing Spider.
Ultimately, Spider’s transformation allows him to become further embraced by the Na’vi, especially now that he can both bond with Pandora’s wildlife and Ewya herself, connecting to the neural network that is the Na’vi spirit world. That said, one of the best new details amid Spider’s transformation can be pretty easily missed.
One Perfect Spider Change Was One Of Fire & Ash’s Most Subtle
Earlier in the film, Spider jokingly complains that Kiri could have made him taller, seeing how the Na’vi tower over humans. While it’s a lighthearted joke, it actually gets paid off during Fire & Ash’s third act.
Trying to reach Eywa for her help against the RDA, Kiri is aided by both Spider and Tuk, who connect their queues to hers so she doesn’t suffer a seizure. While it’s a brief sequence, it’s revealed that Spider has actually become the same height as Kiri within the spirit world.
It’s not a moment that’s super emphasized, though it’s a really fun detail right before one of the movie’s biggest scenes, where Kiri is finally able to look upon the face of the Great Mother herself.
Seeing as how Spider officially becomes one of The People by the movie’s end, it’s pretty cool to see that Spider gets the height boost he was hoping for, even if it’s not in the physical realm.
