Blumhouse’s Time Loop Sci-Fi Horror Hit Reawakens As Worldwide Streaming Smash 6 Years Later

As Hollywood has numerous time loop stories in various genres, a horror one is currently surging on HBO Max.

After being released on February 23, 2019, in theaters, Happy Death Day 2U has become an international streaming hit on HBO Max. The sequel is currently trending at #3 on HBO Max in Colombia and Argentina, respectively.

The second Happy Death Day film is holding the #4 spot for the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming platform in Nicaragua, Panama, Bolivia, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Uruguay. It’s also performing well for HBO Max in Belize, Bahamas, Chile, and Haiti, as it’s surging as #5.

In the United States, Happy Death Day 2U is not available on streaming, but for any audience member, it can be rented or purchased through VOD platforms. Christopher Landon, who directed the first one, was back to helm the sequel, which he wrote this time around.

Following its theatrical run, Happy Death Day 2U grossed $64.6 million at the worldwide box office, based on a reported production budget of $9 million. From the domestic market, the horror continuation pulled in $28.1 million while drawing in $36.4 million from international ticket sales.

At the time of this story’s publication, Happy Death Day 2U is sitting on a 73% rating in the Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes, while having a 60% Popcornmeter. In ScreenRant’sHappy Death Day 2U movie review, Sandy Schaefer gave the sequel 7/10, stating that it “should please fans of the original movie, seeing as it doubles down on the elements that most people seemed to like about the original Happy Death Day (namely, the dark comedy), and adds a fun sci-fi ingredient to the recipe.”

Happy Death Day 3 is moving forward, as Landon and Jessica Rothe revealed in April 2025 that the third installment is moving forward. No release date has been set yet, as it’s unclear when the trilogy finale will start production.
