Just when it felt like the nightmare in Derry had finally gone quiet, new comments from one of the franchise’s key creators are pulling fans right back into the dark sewers.
While many assumed the story of It wrapped up with It: Chapter Two in 2019, that might not be the case after all. As It: Welcome to DerrySeason 1 expanded on the story and has now come to a close, the possibility of It: Chapter Three is very much alive.
The big tease comes from Barbara Muschietti, who co-created It: Welcome to Derry alongside her brother. Speaking with ScreenRant, Muschietti made it clear that the door hasn’t been closed on another movie chapter.
Even though It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two seemed to bring the core Losers Club story to a definitive end, she believes the world Stephen King created still has plenty of dark corners worth exploring.
Muschietti pointed directly to King’s original novel as a major reason the franchise could continue. She said: “We shall see. It is a universe, and there are characters that are still fascinating. There are more gaps.
“When the great Stephen King wrote the book, I think that he left those holes on purpose. And if he didn’t do it on purpose, they’re just as great. They’re great accidents, but for us, they are a wonder.”
That idea of narrative gaps has become even more apparent while developing It: Welcome to Derry, which dives deeper into the town’s twisted history.
According to Muschietti, revisiting the material decades later has fundamentally changed how she and her brother approach the story. “In doing the first season, of course, we uncovered a lot of holes. And also, of course, we read the book for the first time when we were 14 and 15, and now we are 52 and 53.
“We’re parents, and the perspective changes all the time. So, I don’t know. I don’t think this is the end, basically, is all I’ll say,” the creator said.
The It films were already praised for how they balanced childhood fear with adult trauma, and Muschietti’s comments suggest there’s still more emotional ground to cover. Whether that means returning to familiar characters or introducing new ones, the creative team clearly sees Derry as more than a closed book.
As of now, HBO hasn’t officially renewed It: Welcome to Derry for another season, and there’s been no formal announcement of It: Chapter Three. Still, the franchise isn’t finished telling its story. For fans who thought Pennywise’s reign ended, this is a chilling reminder that in Derry, evil has a way of coming back.
