A wild rumor is making the rounds that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is gearing up to bring us the exciting team-up ofTom Holland’s Spider Man andJon Bernthal’s Punisher. Reportedly they will find themselves in a brutal clash with the Grey Hulk.
Marvel Studios’ Spider Man movies have a habit of pulling in larger MCU players, and this next chapter is no exception. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already confirmed the return of Mark Ruffaloas Bruce Banner and The Hulk.
While Spidey and Hulk have technically existed in the same cinematic space before, they have never actually shared a scene together. That makes this who thing such a big deal, especially for longtime comic fans familiar with their history.
In the comics, Spider Man and Hulk have crossed paths plenty of times, and in the post Brand New Day era of Marvel Comics, Hulk was even one of the few characters who remembered Peter Parker’s secret identity. That could add an interesting element to the story if the movie leans into similar territory.
After previously reporting that The Hand will factor into the story, scooper Daniel Richtman is now claiming the film will see Spider Man and The Punisher forced to team up to take down the Grey Hulk. Not the standard green rage monster audiences are used to, but a more savage and unpredictable version of the character.
This is not the first time Marvel Studios has flirted with the Grey Hulk concept. During development on Avengers: Age of Ultron, early concept art and merchandise depicted Hulk turning grey after Scarlet Witch’s spell pushed him into full rampage mode. That idea never made it to the screen, though.
Since Avengers: Endgame introduced Smart Hulk, there has been more interest in seeing Ruffalo’s character regain some of his raw edge because he’s gotten a little stale. A shift into the Grey Savage Hulk could be fun.
Ruffalo was recently asked what it means to him to continue his Hulk journey heading into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and he kept things light while clearly appreciating the ride. He said, “Well, if it does happen, it would be [Laughs] incredible. I grew up with this, and it’s changed my life in the best ways.”
He also touched on what keeps the experience fresh after all these years, adding, “Each time, it’s a new director, a new world, and it’s so exciting. There’s nothing else like it. A TV show doesn’t change its world from one director to the next, and that’s what is exciting.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The script comes from returning Spider Man franchise writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
Holland leads a cast that includes Bernthal as The Punisher, Ruffalo as The Hulk, Zendaya as MJ, Sadie Sink, Michael Mando as The Scorpion, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and Liza Colón-Zayas. Florence Pugh is also expected to return as Yelena Belova following her role in Thunderbolts.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
