One actor, who portrayed one of 2025’s best horror villains, is getting Oscar buzz as more award shows continue to give them well-deserved recognition. Award season is here, and many prominent programs are revealing their nominations. The most recent announcements came from the Golden Globes.
The Globes celebrate many of the best performers and projects in film and television. A few of the most nominated films of the night included One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet. Many of the nominees were expected, but there were a few surprises, like Wicked: For Good‘s omission from Best Picture — Musical or Comedy.
One exciting nominee for horror audiences is Amy Madigan, who is nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for her role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. It’s the latest recognition for Madigan’s performance, who is building momentum toward an Oscar nomination.
Amy Madigan’s Role As Aunt Gladys In Weapons Is Earning Serious Recognition From Awards Shows
Madigan established Gladys as a new horror icon of the 21st century. Her quirky and sinister performance made Gladys an absolutely loathsome villain who is also highly intriguing. Not much of her origins is explained, but a prequel film about her is in development from director Zach Cregger.
Weapons was a critical and box office success, and Madigan is now receiving recognition for her villainous performance. In addition to her recent Golden Globe nomination, Madigan also received a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Critics’ Choice Awards. She also “was named Best Supporting Actress” by the New York Film Critics Circle (via The Wrap).
While things can always change during award season, Madigan’s campaign for an Oscar nomination is gaining traction. It would be her second Academy Award nomination after earning one in 1986 for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Twice in a Lifetime.
Could Amy Madigan Actually Win An Oscar For Playing Aunt Gladys In Weapons?
Unfortunately, the Academy Awards often aren’t too keen on the horror genre. Throughout the history of the Oscars, “only six actors” have ever won for horror roles (via Slash Film). However, if Madigan is nominated, the biggest threat to her Academy Award win would be her strong competition.
At the Golden Globes, her fellow nominees in her category include Elle Fanning for Sentimental Value, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Ariana Grande in Wicked: For Good, Emily Blunt for The Smashing Machine, and Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another.
These may not be the same competitors if she were nominated for an Oscar, but it gives a good look at who is in the running for this category during award season. Madigan is excellent in Weapons, but it could be hard to compete against performances from more award-friendly films.
