The third 28 Years Later movie is officially moving forward. This comes after the positive reactions to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the second installment in the franchise’s new series that will debut in theaters on January 16.
Deadline now reports that in the aftermath of The Bone Temple‘s positive reactions, Sony is taking the next steps with the third 28 Years Later film, which includes 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy being in talks to return. Alex Garland is writing the script for the sequel, which does not have an official title yet.
Murphy was an executive producer on 28 Years Later, which was released earlier on June 20, but he did not appear in the film. It was shot back-to-back with The Bone Temple, which Murphy is also attached to as an executive producer. This filming timeline is why the sequel is able to release in theaters less than a year later.
As the franchise’s creative team has discussed, the plan is for Murphy to return during The Bone Temple‘s ending to set up his larger role in the third film. However, the first two movies needed to be successful enough to make the third one happen.
