Warning: This article contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Super chapter #66.While Dragon Ball Superhas been on hiatus since original creator Akira Toriyama’s passing, fans remain hopeful that the manga will eventually return with Toyotaro taking the reins. However, this anticipation is not just a result of fans’ love for the franchise, but also the long-running build-ups the series has planted over the years.
As fans will know, the most popular build-up in the story right now is the one surrounding Black Frieza’s comeback. But did you know, the series has been quietly preparing for another big comeback, whose seeds were planted in Dragon Ball Z itself. This means that fans have been unknowingly waiting for more than 30 years for this build-up. The character at the center of this comeback is none other than Uub.
Dragon Ball Super Retconned Z’s Timeskip
Before Goku killed Kid Buu with the Spirit Bomb, he wished for the villain to be reincarnated as a good person so he could fight him again someday. King Yemma granted this wish by reincarnating Kid Buu as Uub.
While Goku knew about Uub, he did not meet him until the World Martial Arts Tournament that took place ten years after the final battle against Kid Buu. During this event, Goku fought against Uub and took him under his tutelage. Although this was a wholesome end to the series, Dragon Ball Super later retconned it.
As fans must recall, when Bulma and Vegeta arrived to meet Goku after the timeskip, Bulma stated that it had been five years since they last saw him. However, if the events of Dragon Ball Super are anything to go by, the statements are immediately proven wrong.
As such, it is clear that Dragon Ball Super creates a soft retcon, pushing aside parts of Dragon Ball Z’s original timeskip. However, there is one thing the franchise seems to want to retain, i.e., Uub.
Dragon Ball Super Has Been Slowly Setting Up Uub’s Return
While in the original series it is not until the World Martial Arts Tournament that Goku informs Vegeta and others about his wish, as per Dragon Ball Super, Goku drops the secret years before.
During Dragon Ball Super’s Universe 6 Saga, when Goku, Vegeta, and Krillin were selecting fighters for the Tournament of Destroyers, Goku casually informed them about his wish and how Kid Buu had now been reborn as a good human. Unfortunately, although powerful, the child was still a newborn and too young to participate.
Later, the manga again gives a nod to Uub during the Tournament of Power Saga. When Goku was looking for participants for the tournament, Dende asked Goku to train a very young yet brilliant martial artist. While Goku believed he was not good at that sort of thing, he was immediately interested when he learned that the boy was Kid Buu’s reincarnation. In fact, when Goku stared toward Uub’s village, the Kid Buu reincarnation felt eyes on him.
Dragon Ball Super’s Moro Arc Gave Fans the Biggest Uub Comeback Tease
In Dragon Ball Super chapter 66, after Moro fused himself with Earth, Goku struggled to finish the fight. In response, Vegeta used his Spirit Fission in reverse to gather energy from his allies and lend it to Goku.
While this helped Goku to turn back into Super Saiyan Blue, it was not enough to reach Perfected Ultra Instinct state. Suddenly, a surge of God ki reached Vegeta, which he transferred to Goku. This mysterious power source turned out to be Uub.
After Jaco realized that Goku needed God ki to defeat Moro, he immediately went to the Lookout, looking for Majin Buu. Moments later, the Grand Supreme Kai that Kid Buu once absorbed appeared before Uub in his village. He instructed him to extend his hand to give his energy to Goku.
Since Uub was the reincarnation of Kid Buu and held the Grand Supreme Kai’s Godly power, the Grand Supreme Kai was able to combine Majin Buu’s latent power with Uub’s latent God Ki and send it to Goku. Fortunately, this move turned out well, as the ki they sent was more than enough to give Goku the much-needed boost to defeat Moro.
Uub’s Possible Dragon Ball Super Comeback Is Going to Be Huge
As fans must remember, before Dragon Ball Super went on hiatus, it established that Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly were now all in the same power range. With that, despite the fact that the manga majorly focused on Goku and Vegeta, it restored some balance in the power hierarchy.
Uub’s possible comeback has the potential to shake up this power dynamic once again. As Kid Buu’s reincarnation, Uub not only possessed Majin Buu’s latent energy, but also the Grand Supreme Kai’s latent God ki. Thus, once he learns how to control these abilities, he is bound to grow stronger at an incredible pace.
Hence, if Dragon Ball Super continues and Uub makes his long-awaited comeback, it will likely be one of the biggest turning points in the franchise, one that took over 30 years to come to fruition.
