Game of Thronesmay have put HBO on the map for fantasy fans, but Prime Video also has plenty of offerings in the genre to fill the void. With House of the Dragon going into season 3 and Game of Thrones‘ second spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to premiere on January 18, 2026, George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe isn’t going away anytime soon.
But fantasy lovers wanting to take a break from Westeros need something too. Luckily, Prime Video has a treasure trove of excellent fantasy shows, along with other grittier series that capture Game of Thrones‘ darker themes. No matter which element of Game of Thrones appeals to you the most, Prime Video’s got you covered.
The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power
2022-Present
Game of Thrones proved how spectacular an epic-scale fantasy series can be, and in that regard, The Rings of Power owes the HBO series a tremendous debt. Above all else, the Lord of the Rings prequel series has been praised for its high production value, full of striking special effects and visuals, like its jaw-dropping depiction of the island kingdom of Númenor.
The Rings of Power is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth and centers on both the forging of the titular rings and the Dark Lord Sauron’s rise to power. It’s hard to find a more immersive fantasy series currently airing, and hardcore fans and newcomers alike will find themselves swept up in everything from The Rings of Power‘s epic battles to the show’s complex character dynamics.
The Prime Video series will definitely appeal to Game of Thrones fans who are partial to the show’s high fantasy elements, and while The Rings of Power may not have as much grit as GoT, it’s certainly got as much magic — if not more. Though some have criticized The Rings of Power‘s weaker story elements, it has a chance to redeem itself in season 3.
The Boys
2019-Present
The Boys is bloody, cruel, and shows the absolute worst of humanity. Sound familiar? Whereas Game of Thrones takes place in the mythical land of Westeros, The Boys is set in a fictionalized version of New York City. However, both shows are about the brutal struggle for ultimate power and control.
Like how much of Game of Thrones is about the War of the Seven Kingdoms, The Boys centers on two warring factions — the corporate-sponsored superhero team known as “the Seven” and the titular Boys, a vigilante group looking to take the Seven down. Game of Thrones‘ most powerful characters are also the most villainous, and the same is true of the Seven, who bleed corruption.
The Boys is not for the faint of heart, and has been criticized for its gratuitous violence, a complaint also often lobbed at Game of Thrones. But if a bloodlusty show is what you’re after, The Boys is for you.
The Boys is going into its fifth and final season next year and, unlike Game of Thrones, which went downhill towards the end, has maintained a consistently high quality, so there’s every chance it will stick the landing.
My Lady Jane
2024
At first blush, it may seem odd to recommend a comedic show like My Lady Jane to Game of Thrones fans, but despite its lighter tone, the two series have a lot in common. My Lady Jane centers on a fictionalized version of Lady Jane Grey in an alternative 16th-century England.
While not as explicit as Game of Thrones, My Lady Jane has its share of raunchy content, and will appeal to GoT fans who enjoy the steamier, more romantic elements in the show. When Game of Thrones was at its worst, it was dour and dull, which isn’t a problem you’ll find in the buoyant My Lady Jane, largely because of its romance storylines.
If that’s not enough to convince you, know that George R. R. Martin himself is a fan of My Lady Jane, and spoke out against its untimely cancellation after just one season. Sadly, that’s a fate many fantasy series know too well, but My Lady Jane is still worth a watch.
The Wheel Of Time
2021-2025
It’s a cold, hard truth that Game of Thrones was not always kind to its women characters, which was especially frustrating for female fans of the show. That’s what makes the female-driven Wheel of Time such a breath of fresh air, not just compared to Game of Thrones but the fantasy genre as a whole.
In The Wheel of Time, women are the ones who wield the “One Power“, with the show focusing on the powerful Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike in one of her best roles) and her quest to find the Dragon Reborn and save the world. If you found yourself drawn to Melisandre in Game of Thrones but didn’t like her villainy, there’s no doubt you’ll be enchanted by Moiraine, who actually uses her powers for good.
Just like Game of Thrones, The Wheel of Time incorporates everything that makes a fantasy series great — intricate worldbuilding, rich lore, characters who land all over the morality spectrum, and a ton of cool magic. While The Wheel of Time was controversially canceled after its third season, at the very least, it didn’t suffer Game of Thrones‘ problem of completely blowing its own ending.
The Expanse
2015-2022
The Expanse has literally been referred to as “Game of Thrones in space“, so there really is no better show to recommend to fans of the HBO fantasy series. While The Expanse is hard sci-fi, not fantasy, its political intrigue and stunning spectacle are every bit as riveting as Game of Thrones.
In The Expanse, humanity has colonized the Solar System, setting up a similar political landscape surrounding the Iron Throne, as Earth, Mars, and a faction known as “the Belt” are all battling for power and control over it. Meanwhile, The Expanse‘s characters must also face a growing existential threat known as the protomolecule, which is eerily similar to GoT‘s White Walkers.
Unlike prematurely canceled fantasy shows, The Expanse got to tell a complete story in its six seasons. The Prime Video series never faltered in quality and, most importantly, The Expanse had a satisfying ending worthy of its characters and fans, a feat that Game of Thrones was never able to achieve.
