Macaulay Culkin shares an idea that he has for a new Home Alone sequel. He famously played eight-year-old Kevin McCallister in the all-time great Christmas movie, where he is accidentally left at home by his family during the holidays, and sets traps to protect himself and the house from two robbers. Culkin reprised the role in the first sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
During a stop on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour, Culkin now reveals that he is open to a new Home Alone sequel that “would have to be just right.” Culkin shars that he has his own idea for a sequel that would involve an adult Kevin being locked out of the house and facing traps from his own son. Check out his comments below:
I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.
Culkin expanded on the pitch by explaining that “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship” and that Kevin has to ‘“get let back into son’s heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”
This premise would essentially have Kevin take on the role of the robbers, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Heard in the original 1990 film and in the Lost in New York sequel. Kevin would technically be the antagonist this time, although he would be far less nefarious than Pesci and Heard’s characters, and the film would seemingly culminate in a heartfelt reconciliation between father and son.
While this would be the first time Culkin has played Kevin since 1992’s Lost in New York, there have been many other Home Alone movies in the years since then. There are a total of six movies in the franchise, with the other sequels being Home Alone 3, Home Alone 4, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, and Home Sweet Home Alone.
| Home Alone Movie | Release Year |
|---|---|
| Home Alone | 1990 |
| Home Alone 2: Lost in New York | 1992 |
| Home Alone 3 | 1997 |
| Home Alone 4 | 2002 |
| Home Alone: The Holiday Heist | 2012 |
| Home Sweet Home Alone | 2021 |
Despite the franchise’s longevity, none of the sequels have been as well-received or as popular as the first two installments. A legacy sequel starring Culkin as Kevin for the first time in over 30 years would inevitably generate more excitement than the other sequels have.
If Culkin’s sequel idea does happen, director Chris Columbus may not be on board for it, as he shared in August 2025 that he believed a Home Alone reboot to be “a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.” Columbus directed the original movie and Lost in New York.
While Culkin is still best known for playing Kevin in Home Alone, he has starred in a variety of projects over the years. His upcoming projects include Fallout season 2, set to premiere on December 17, as he joins the Prime Video’s hit series in a recurring role that has remained under wraps.
