The decades-long creative collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio has been one of the most successful in Hollywood’s history. Thankfully, it is to continue into the foreseeable future as Scorsese shows no signs of slowing. The movie that started it all, Gangs of New York, is reportedly making a comeback to our screens in the form of a TV series from Miramax. However, as we look forward to more details on that project, fans can now easily relive the 2002 epic crime thriller as it has just become available to stream for free on Pluto TV.
Gangs of New York became the film to announce DiCaprio as Scorsese’s new muse, a spot previously held by Robert De Niro. Interestingly, it was De Niro who picked his own replacement, first introducing Scorsese to his This Boy’s Life co-star. The chemistry between director and actor was instant, and Gangs of New York proved a strong start to what would become one of Hollywood’s most enduring creative partnerships. DiCaprio was impressive, though some argued that Daniel Day-Lewis’s mesmerizing turn as Bill “The Butcher” Cutting stole the show. The synopsis for the movie reads:
“Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) is a young Irish immigrant released from prison. He returns to the Five Points seeking revenge against his father’s killer, William Cutting (Day-Lewis), a powerful anti-immigrant gang leader. He knows that revenge can only be attained by infiltrating Cutting’s inner circle. Amsterdam’s journey becomes a fight for personal survival and to find a place for the Irish people in 1860’s New York.”
Audiences may soon experience a fresh take on the story, as Miramax, the studio behind Gangs of New York, is developing a TV adaptation of the Oscar-nominated epic. Earlier this year, the studio announced plans to reimagine several of its acclaimed films for television, part of a broader effort to honor its creative legacy and move beyond the controversies tied to disgraced former owner Harvey Weinstein. Alongside Gangs of New York, projects in development include The English Patient, Chocolat, and the recent critical hit The Holdovers. All are currently in early development, with no cast or creative teams attached yet.
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio Are Reuniting Soon
Scorsese has a myriad of stories he hopes to explore with his longtime muse, and one appears to be moving faster than the rest. The pair will reunite for a feature adaptation of Peter Cameron’s What Happens at Night, marking their return to horror after 2010’s Shutter Island. The story adapted for the screen by Patrick Marbet follows an American couple who travel to Europe to adopt a baby, checking into a “cavernous, largely deserted hotel” where encounters with mysterious guests begin to unravel their marriage. DiCaprio will star opposite Jennifer Lawrence, working with Scorsese for the first time, and filming is expected to begin next year. Additionally, DiCaprio is also expected to star in Scorsese’s Hawaiian crime movie alongside Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
