Ryan Reynolds Trades Deadpool for Downtown With New Movie From ‘Gilmore Girls’ Creator

The words Deadpool and Gilmore Girls have probably never been in a sentence before, until now. But now the minds between bringing the two properties to life will be teaming up for a new project at Netflix. It’s been confirmed that Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, and Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool himself, are tied to a brand-new Eloise live-action adaptation for Netflix. Reynolds will co-star as well as produce on the project. Newcomer Mae Schenk will star as the titular mischievous Eloise. The adventure will be completely original, so not directly inspired by the original books other than the characters written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight.

Reynolds will be an “original villainous character,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. And the project is already moving along, with principal photography beginning this month. Sherman-Palladino will pen the new story alongside Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. According to THR, George Dewey, Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau will also produce for Maximum Effort along with Woolverton. Molly Milstein will executive produce for Maximum Effort.

The New ‘Eloise’ Film Will Be “Bold” and “Heartfelt”

The most recent adaptation of the beloved children’s story came in 2003 with Eloise at the Plaza. It starred Sofia Vassilieva as Eloise and Julie Andrews as Nanny. The adventure followed Vassilieva as the mischievous 6-year-old Eloise, with Andrews trying (and failing) to keep her in line while she lived at the Plaza Hotel. The 2003 film also starred Jeffrey Tambor as Mr. Salomone, Christine Baranski as Prunella Stickler, Kenneth Welsh as Sir Wilkes, Jonas Chernick as Philip, Stephanie Anne Mills as Molly Daniels, Debra Monk as Maggie, and Gavin Creel as Bill. Hannah Minghella, a Netflix executive says, “Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza.” Minghella also teases the tone of the upcoming project:

“It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm — Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds — in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”

Reynolds and Schenk are the only cast announced for the upcoming new adaptation of the Kay Thompson children’s books. Principal photography will begin this month. You can watch the 2003 adaptation of Eloise now on Prime Video. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
