Back in August, it was reported that Netflix and Sony have plans to release a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. And while there hasn’t been much detail on what the follow-up film will be about, there has been a minor pre-production update. Rei Ami, the singing voice of Zoey, shared a pre-production update on the animated feature’s follow-up, and things aren’t moving forward.
In a recent interview with E! News, Ami was asked about the upcoming sequel, to which she said that she’s “waiting for the call,” hinting that it’s still in its early pre-production stage. Since the announcement a few months ago, there haven’t been many updates on the sequel’s development. The director, Maggie Kang, has shared her ideas for the follow-up, as well as some of the other cast members, but nothing has been officially revealed.
“I’m waiting for the call, just like you! You’re gonna find out when I do, so we’ll chat then.”
Kpop Demon Hunters is an animated feature that follows a Kpop idol group called Huntr/x, who are also demon hunters. Their job is to use their singing voices to seal and maintain a magical barrier called the Honmoon, preventing demons from entering the human world. Due to the lack of success that the Demons are having, the king of the demons, Gwi-Ma (Lee Byung-hun), agrees to Jinu’s (Ahn Hyo-seop) plan to form a male demon idol group to combat the demon hunters.
Is ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ Losing Its Edge?
Despite its high critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes and its huge streaming numbers on Spotify, KPop Demon Hunters was unable to generate strong box office numbers during its Halloween theatrical re-release last weekend. During its first theatrical run in August, the film earned $18 million. However, it was recently reported that it only made $5.3 million, where $600,000 was generated on Halloween.
Meanwhile, on the Netflix charts, KPop Demon Hunters has been slowly slipping through the ranks during its nearly 20-week domination. What was once the #1 film in each week’s Top Movies overview is now sitting at #3 for two weeks. Regardless, it’s still Netflix’s Most Watched Movie of All Time, so slipping down the ranks isn’t going to affect its view count.
Despite the recent low numbers, KPop Demon Hunters has been a massive success in 2025. Merchandise for the popular K-pop musical fantasy has been announced and released. Official lightsticks, as seen in the film, are now available for pre-order on the Netflix merch shop, allowing fans to show their support just like a real K-pop idol group.
