Mayor Of Kingstown Star Joins Different Taylor Sheridan Series After Shocking Character Death

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 2.After his Mayor of Kingstown character’s death, Lane Garrison is headed to a different Taylor Sheridan series. Garrison plays Carney, a Kingstown prison guard who is fiercely loyal to Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner).

In Mayor of Kingstown season 4, episode 2, Carney is shockingly killed at the hands of Cortez (Derek Rivera). This not only brings a sudden end to Carney’s story, but also means that Mike has lost a loyal ally.

While speaking with TV Insider about Carney’s death, Garrison admits that he didn’t see his character’s fate coming. When he learned the news, though, he also found out that he would be joining Tulsa King, another Sheridan-created series on Paramount+. Check out Garrison’s comments below:

I didn’t either. I was a little shocked. I got a call this past summer from the executive producer, which is always that weird call. It’s like, you’re either getting called up to the major leagues, or it’s, “You’re cut, and we’re sending you to Triple-A, and you’re never gonna make it in the majors.” And so I picked it up, and then they’re like, “We’ve got good news and we have bad news. The bad news is we’re killing you.” Like, “What’s the good news?” “We’re gonna find something for you in Tulsa King.” I’ve yet to do that, but, yeah, it was a bit of a shocker, but at least they let me know, “Hey, coming into this season, don’t get too settled.” It’s always disappointing when this quirky group of people become part of your family, and then you have to say goodbye. That’s the hardest part.

Garrison doesn’t know any details yet about his upcoming role, although he is excited to possibly work with Michael Beach, who has also starred in both Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King. As eager as Garrison is to join Tulsa King and potentially other Taylor Sheridan shows like Landman, he did share the one condition he has before debuting on the Sylvester Stallone-led crime thriller.

Well, no, I don’t know yet. They just told me that, and I don’t know… but I’m hoping so, because I would love to go see Michael Beach, who rolled over from our show to that, and he was one of my favorite people I’ve ever worked with. So I don’t know, maybe I get a call from there, or Landman or somewhere, but I’m not going to die on the next one. I’m going to tell them, “If I die, I’m not doing it.” This was like my 16th or 17th on-screen death. It gets old because it’s more work to say goodbye than to do the actual death. It’s like, “Hey, I know these 200 people!”

This is not the first time that Garrison has appeared in multiple Taylor Sheridan shows. Along with Mayor of Kingstown, he starred in four episodes of Yellowstone season 2. He now joins James Jordan, Dawn Olivieri, Matt Gerald, and Nichole Galicia, all of whom have been in at least three Sheridan series now.

With season 3 in the midst of releasing new episodes on Paramount+, Garrison is set to appear in Tulsa King season 4, which was renewed ahead of the season 3 premiere. Who he will be playing remains under wraps, but if his condition is met, Garrison’s character will not die as Carney did and will get to survive this time around.

The news of Garrison’s continued collaboration with Sheridan comes only a week after it was revealed that the prolific television creator is leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal. This will not take immediate effect, though, as Sheridan’s television deal with Paramount will continue through 2028 and his five-year deal with NBCUniversal doesn’t begin until 2029.

Since Sheridan is contractually obligated to create at least 20 shows for NBC’s streaming service Peacock, it is possible that he could create yet another series starring Garrison, even featuring him in a leading role. That being said, this would be years away from coming to fruition. For now, Garrison can be seen in Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone, and in Tulsa King‘s future.
