Each month, Netflix says goodbye to countless titles, and welcomes a whole new batch of TV shows and movies. On November 4, for instance, it’ll become the new streaming home of Minx, a two-season series that began back in 2022. The series, created by Ellen Rapoport, will be in its third home to date. The series was initially an HBO Max production before being canceled in the middle of filming for Season 2. Shortly after that, Starz slid right in and became the show’s new partner, releasing Season 2 in July 2023. Now, Minx will be in a whole new home, and chances are it’ll be Netflix’s newest sleeper hit.
What Is ‘Minx’ About?
Set in the 70s, Minx Season 1 starts off with self-professed feminist Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) as she tries and fails to launch her feminist magazine. In her attempt, however, she manages to impress Doug (Jake Johnson), a small-time publisher who’s made a living publishing porno magazines for men. When they meet, an idea awakens: they’ll join forces and create the world’s first erotic magazine for women, named Minx. With it, not only would the magazine fill a long-forgotten gap in the market, but the magazine would ignite a movement, finally catering to the women’s gaze.
By Season 2, the controversial and unapologetically raunchy magazine has been officially released to the world, and it’s reaching unprecedented fame. Instead of tackling the chaos of creating a business from scratch like in Season 2, the sophomore season focuses on Minx’s growing pains, especially when it means Joyce’s goals for legitimacy and mainstream recognition conflict with Doug’s focus on making it profitable and true to its roots. Plus, Season 2 also welcomes Constance Papadopoulos (Elizabeth Perkins), a former CEO who agrees to finance their operation, but has strong editorial visions of her own.
‘Minx’ Will Be Netflix’s Next Sleeper Hit
While Minx came to an end after Season 2, the series is a true treat to viewers. For starters, as Johnson proved during his days in New Girl, he knows how to nail onscreen chemistry. In each episode, Doug and Joyce, who are polar opposites to one another, are electric together, making viewers engaged and gripped, while making each of their disagreements nuanced and interesting. But it’s not just the main stars of the show that keep it going. In fact, some of the highlights of the series are its secondary characters, like Bambi (Jessica Lowe), Shelly (Lennon Parham), and Richie (Oscar Montoya), who have their own personal journeys in finding their independence and sexual liberation.
Another reason why Minx is a must-watch is how unique the show, and the era its portraying, really is. By mastering the classic 70s retro aesthetic, and the misogynistic views of the publishing world at the time, the show shines a light on an era in history that’s so rarely seen on TV. So, not only is the show portraying a slice of American history, but it shows a woman’s personal journey in advocating for herself and her ambitions in a still-developing second wave of feminism.
With that said, when Minx reaches its third-ever streaming home on November 4, chances are it’ll be a streaming hit. Not only will Johnson and Lovibond draw viewers in, but the show’s spot-on 70s aesthetic, the character’s witty and funny dynamics, and the hilarious and yet bumpy ride they embark on will keep viewers engaged until the very end.
