A Pair of Prime Video’s Cruelly Cancelled Action Series Surge Back Into Streaming Top 10

Two Prime Video action shows that were canceled after only one season are dominating streaming, leading people to wonder if the studio made the right decision regarding their cancellation. Fans were taken aback last month when Prime Video announced it would not be moving forward with second seasons of Countdown and Butterfly, two projects it had marketed heavily in the weeks leading up to release. Fans are proving they are not satisfied with the cancellations of Countdown and Butterfly, which have surged into the Prime Video global top 10. Countdown is #3 and Butterfly is #4 on the streamer at the time of writing.

Countdown stars Jensen Ackles, Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, and Elliot Knight. The action/crime thriller series follows an LAPD officer who joins a secret task force that uncovers a plot to kill millions in the city. The series was panned heavily by critics, which led to it holding a rotten 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the audience-driven Popcornmeter came to rest at 63%, which isn’t anything to write home about. Countdown was written and created for TV by Derek Haas, who is also famous for his work writing all three interweaving procedurals known as One Chicago.

Butterfly stars Daniel Dae Kim, Piper Perabo, and Reina Hardesty, and the show follows a former intelligence officer on the run after the sins of his past come back to haunt him. It immediately drew comparisons to Alan Ritchson’s Reacher upon release, with some even going as far as to call it a Reacher replacement. Butterfly released all episodes at once as a binge, but it was mostly well liked by critics and audiences, earning scores of 68% and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Kim also worked as an executive producer on Butterfly, which was showrun by Ken Woodruff.

Prime Video Cancelled Another Beloved Series Earlier This Year

Back in May, Prime Video cancelled The Wheel of Time after three seasons. This was a devastating blow to fans around the world — the show had accumulated a massive following over its run. Even stars and creatives involved with the making of The Wheel of Time were stunned when Prime Video announced it would not receive a Season 4. The decision to cancel The Wheel of Time was reportedly only a financial one as many Amazon executives were fans of the show; this didn’t help ease the pain for fans who grew attached to its beloved characters.
