Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake’s Best Change Is Hiding In Plain Sight

Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake makes numerous changes to the two classic RPGs included here, but some of those changes are definitely more impactful than others. From quality-of-life improvements to new characters and cutscenes, there are plenty of changes to discover as you take on villains like Dragonlord and Hargon to save the world, but one alteration is definitely its best.

The latest Dragon Quest remakes make no secret of including new content, with promotional materials teasing the addition of Sigils in DQ1 and Scrolls in both games, along with the Princess of Cannock becoming a playable party member. Some changes, like the location of the Magic Key in DQ2, seem to be there to shake things up or justify new scenarios.

DQ 1+2 Remakes’ Best Change Is The Princess Of Cannock

The Worst-Kept Secret Is Its Best

The princess in Dragon Quest 1 remake.

Early on, you get the Princess of Cannock to temporarily join your party, and later, she can join it permanently. Between DQ1 and DQ2 HD-2D Remake, getting the Princess of Cannock (called Matilda by default) into your party is a real game changer. The fourth party member balances out Dragon Quest 2, which was originally a pretty notoriously difficult game. Between spells, abilities, and an impressively high Luck stat, she’s great to have along.

While there are surprises in store for anyone playing Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, the best is easily the Princess of Cannock, which is perhaps ironic since she was teased so long ago. The game’s worst-kept secret has ended up being its best new addition. If you’re sad to see her depart in the early moments of the game, fear not — you can get her in your party again.

If you’re playing the game and are like me, you might be disappointed to see the Princess of Cannock leaving your side so soon after joining you. Thankfully, she’ll rejoin your party at a later stage of Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake. Once you start looking for Sigils, you’ll arrive in Beran. There, the Prince of Cannock will be poisoned by monsters (a slight change from the original game’s scenario).

You and the Princess of Moonbrooke will need to find an Yggdrasil Leaf. During this slight side journey, you’ll eventually team up with the Princess of Cannock, Matilda, again. Upon reviving the Prince of Cannock in Beran, the Princess of Cannock will permanently join your party. You’ll be able to customize her equipment, access her spells and abilities, and control her character in combat from now on. It’s a nice addition to the game, and easily the greatest change in Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake.
