After many weeks on the U.S. Prime Video streaming charts dominated by the trio of The Boys spin-off Gen V, the hugely popular The Summer I Turned Pretty, and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, there is finally a new chart topper at the time of writing. After premiering its second season on Wednesday, October 29, the animated adult musical comedy series Hazbin Hotel now sits on the Prime Video streaming throne, although for how long is anyone’s guess. Waiting in the wings are countless other shows, old and new, hoping to find the spark to shoot them to the top of the charts. ‘The Magicians’ (2015–2020)

With today marking the devil’s favorite date on the calendar, why not try something with a fantasy edge this weekend? The Magicians, based on the book trilogy by Lev Grossman, follows a group of new students who find themselves recruited to a strange school as they realize their childhood play was stranger than fiction.
Not dissimilar to the central story of Harry Potter, perhaps The Magicians is the perfect replacement series whilst you wait for the upcoming HBO adaptation of the blockbuster fantasy franchise. After running on Syfy for five seasons, The Magicians is now available on Prime Video in all its wizarding glory, featuring 65 total episodes, each more enticing than the last.

‘House’ (2004–2012)

One of the most popular medical shows of all time, Housefollows Hugh Laurie‘s titular Dr. Gregory House, a cynical genius whose unorthodox attitude would leave him utterly unlikable were it not for his irrefutable results. However, having to work alongside the likes of Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) and Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) leads to plenty of personal drama in the life of a medical master.
On air for eight incredible years, House picked up an impressive five Primetime Emmys among many more nominations during its run. A compelling series blending intricate drama, dark humor, and a dedication to somewhat capturing the spirit of the real medical profession, if all this doesn’t encourage you to watch House, it is at the very least worth watching just to hear Laurie’s perfect American accent.

‘Northern Exposure’ (1990–1995)

The world loves a gripping drama in a small town. For fans of the likes of Virgin River, you certainly won’t regret a binge-watch of the brilliantly underrated Northern Exposure. Following Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow) as he is required to move to Cicely, Alaska, to repay the state for his medical education, the series documents the many relationships, good and bad, he forges along the way.
A workplace comedy with plenty of quirks, Northern Exposure is the series you probably didn’t know you needed in your life. A winner of seven Primetime Emmys during its five-year run, the show is a slice of nostalgia for those who remember the Americana of the ’90s, and for those who don’t, it’s still a worthwhile trip into the life of a fascinating central character sure to keep you hooked.
