Mel Gibson is hard at work right now on his next two Passion of the Christ movies, but just a few years ago, he teamed up with a Fallout star for a holiday thriller that’s coming back to streaming. Gibson stars alongside Walton Goggins in Fatman, the 2020 action comedy following a rowdy and unorthodox Santa Claus (Gibson) fighting to revive his struggling business while a neglected 12-year-old hires a hitman to take Santa out after receiving coal for Christmas. Paramount has announced that Gibson and Goggins’ Fatman will begin streaming on Paramount+ at the start of next month, on November 1.
Mel Gibson’s Fatman was panned by critics upon release, leading to it holding a Rotten 43% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film landed with fans, who rated it a solid 84% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It did not receive a wide theatrical release in the United States or international markets, which led to it grossing less than $2 million at the global box office. Fatman can be grouped into this new genre of holiday action thrillers like Violent Night, which feature big stars playing Santa Claus in action thrillers set against the backdrop of the Christmas holiday.
Ian and Eshom Nelms wrote the script for Fatman, and they both directed the film. The two have also worked on other projects in the past, like Red Right Hand, Small Town Crime, and Waffle Street. Gibson is best known for his role in the Lethal Weapon franchise, and there have even been whispers that he will direct a fifth and final installment. Gibson is also famous for his work on other epics like Braveheart and The Patriot.
When Does ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Come Out?
Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ is being split into two parts, with the first being released on March 26, 2027, and the second coming only a few months later on May 6, 2027. It was announced just last week that original Jesus Christ actor Jim Cavaziel is backing out of the project, and only a few days later, Gibson replaced him with Jaakko Ohtonen. Rupert Everett, Mariela Agarrigha, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Pier Luigi Pasino will also star. Gibson is currently filming the sequels overseas right now ahead of their planned 2027 release dates.
Check out Fatman on Paramount+ starting November 1 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
