Ryan Coogler has finally delivered an update on his long-gestating X-Files reboot. X-Files creator Chris Carter confirmed that Coogler would handle a reboot of the series over two years ago, but updates on the project have been sparse as Coogler was busy with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Sinners. While it’s still unclear when the X-Files reboot will be released, Coogler recently sat down for an interview during his spooky cemetery screening of Sinners, and he spoke about The X-Files for the first time in a while.
“Like my relationship with Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is one of those things with my mom,” Coogler said. He spearheaded the Creed reboot of the Rocky franchise led by Michael B. Jordan, and while he’s still involved as an executive producer, he’s passed off directorial duties to his star for now. He continued, “My mom means the world to me — she’s actually here tonight — so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.” If Coogler is writing X-Files material right now, it may very well be his next project on the slate.
It’s been rumored that Danielle Deadwyler is attached to star in the lead role in Coogler’s X-Files reboot, but Coogler declined to confirm or deny any truth to this. He did the same with the rumors that original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny would reprise their roles. For something this important to Coogler (and his mom), it’s easy to see why he’s putting his all into it.
Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Is Coming Back to Theaters
After grossing over $350 million worldwide earlier this year and becoming one of the biggest horror movies of all time, Coogler’s Sinners is coming back to theaters for Halloween. The film will make its return to the big screen starting on October 30 and play on select screens until November 5. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in the dual role of Smoke and Stack, and Jordan is being eyed as a heavy Oscar contender for Best Lead Actor. Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and Li Jun Li also star in Sinners. Coogler is also attached to direct the third Black Panther movie in the MCU, which will seemingly come after the X-Files reboot.
