Julia Roberts and Luca Guadagnino Reveal the Films That Inspired ‘After the Hunt’ in a New Alamo Drafthouse Guest Selects [Exclusive]

After having worked with incredibly talented performers such as Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and Daniel Craig, it’s no surprise that Luca Guadagnino has assembled yet another stellar cast for his upcoming project, After the Hunt. Set for a theatrical release on October 10, the film features the talents of Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield in leading roles. Today, in support of tickets going on sale, we’re thrilled to partner with the Alamo Drafthouse to exclusively unveil a close-up look at the favorite and most inspirational cinematic pieces of Roberts and Guadagnino as the latest installment to come from the theater franchise’s popular Guest Selects series.

Pull up a chair and hear from the leading lady behind modern masterpieces like Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Leave the World Behind, and more, while she chats about great cinema with the Oscar and BAFTA-nominated director behind critically acclaimed movies like Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, and Challengers. Trading ideas about their favorite titles, the pair chat about the ins and outs of Jacques Tati’s Playtime and Mike NicholsWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the latter of which Guadagnino says fully inspired him while working on After the Hunt. There’s also Nichols’ The Closer, which Guadagnino praises for Roberts’ performance and the way so much is said without words. Tying everything together, the pair round out their session with a chat about Woody Allen’s Another Woman.

What Is ‘After the Hunt’ About?

After listening to Roberts and Guadagnino speak about these four films and how they not only impacted them as viewers but also inspired them during the filming of After the Hunt, we get a fuller picture of what to expect from the upcoming film. In it, Roberts stars as Yale professor Alma, who sees something special in one of her philosophy students, Maggie (Edebiri). Alma’s circle of friends runs deep, with one of her closest being Garfield’s Hank, who is always down to share a glass of wine and an open debate. But, when Maggie accuses Hank of assault, Alma is thrown into the middle and forced to make difficult decisions that will have life-changing effects on not only her, but those closest to her.

In addition to the leading trio of A-list stars, the supporting ensemble for Guadagnino’s latest filmmaking foray includes the stellar talents of Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name), Chloë Sevigny (Zodiac), Lío Mehiel (Mutt), and more.
