Foo Fighters New Drummer Speaks Out After First Official Show

After a tumultuous year and controversial lineup changes, the Foo Fighters seem to have finally found their missing piece in former Nine Inch Nails drummer, Ilan Rubin. The 37-year-old drummer joined Dave Grohls band this year after the surprising dismissal of Josh Freese, who had replaced the late Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins’ passing in 2022 left a hole in the band that seemed impossible to fill, but after some trial and error, the Foo Fighters might have found the perfect replacement. After keeping quiet for months, Ilan Rubin has finally spoken up about this new, exciting chapter of his life.

Foo Fighters’ New Drummer Ilan Rubin Speaks Out

On Saturday, September 13, the Foo Fighters played their first show with their new lineup during a surprise appearance at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California. The band took the stage and played 25 songs, including deep cuts from the first Foo Fighters album, which Dave Grohl recorded on his own. As is usual in Foo Fighters shows, halfway through the concert, Grohl introduced the band, including their newest addition. “Everybody else has said it,” he started. “I finally get the opportunity to say: Ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome the most badass motherf*****, Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters right now. It’s official. You can stamp the passport.

It was an intense show, which will be followed up with another concert on September 15, at the Observatory in Santa Ana, California. It was a very emotional night for both fans and the band, and Ilan Rubin shared his feelings on this new chapter of his career in a heartwarming Instagram post. “Last night with Foo Fighters could not have been a better time,” he gushed. “After keeping my head down for a couple wild months and throwing myself into the material, that first show was such an incredible release of energy.”

“I’ve been taken aback by all the positivity and support, and I just wanted to say thanks! Excited for all the volume and sweat that lies ahead.”

While Ilan Rubin is replacing Josh Freese, it seems things turned out for the best for everyone involved. Before joining the Foo Fighters, Rubin played in Nine Inch Nails, Freese’s former band. Because of his departure, Freese was offered his old position back, and he couldn’t be happier to rejoin his old musical family. Fans should keep an eye out for news from both bands.
